Post by Charleville »

What is an ASLD?

Glad you asked ...it stands for:

Areas of Special Local Character

Lewisham Council have set-up an online survey to gather feedback from residents, amenity groups, neighbourhood groups and local historians regarding six potential ASLCs in Forest Hill and Sydenham.

The six areas being considered are:

1. Charleville Circus
2. Hall Drive
3. Rockbourne Road
4. Kirkdale
5. Sydenham Ridge
6. Woolstone & Hurstbourne Roads

THE DEADLINE FOR YOUR INPUT IS 22 SEPTEMBER 2024

My favourite area is Charleville Circus and an in-depth study of its history is available at:

does Kirkdale have any character? As some who grew up Kirkdale area i the 1940s/50s/60s I say its now souless and characterless [mind you I only go back via google street view now]
I remember Dartmouthroad/kirkdale junction full of a variety of small useful shops, not a takeaway to be had.
Businesses ranged from the laundry through expess dairy, fuel station Pubs cafes and all the sort of shops where you'd do daily shopping, even a toy shop where us kids would look in and do 'baggsy'. two barbers, two greengrocers,a baker,Bouchers stores, Motts chemist, a Butchers, a cobbler. a launderette, about 3 sweetshop tobaconists, plus many others, its all shutters and graffiti now.
More character when it had bomb sites.

It's a term used in urban planning to identify specific areas within a community that have unique historical, cultural, or architectural significance. These areas are often protected to preserve their character and prevent development that could harm their unique qualities.
