Jonathan Kaufman's Spontaneous Productions in association with Kirkdale Bookshop, has exciting plans to develop a new theatre space upstairs at the Sydenham Centre starting Spring 2017.
This newly refurbished building, next to Sydenham post office and formerly known as the Naborhood Centre, is currently being developed by Lewisham Council as a community-focused venue and Spontaneous very much hopes to become an integral part of its operations.
We’d love to gauge your interest in this idea and are inviting you to complete a short survey to help us make this venture a really successful and popular one.
Please complete the survey here – https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/F5SJLGN – and if you have any further questions or thoughts please contact Creative Director Jonathan Kaufman directly at jonathan@sptheatre.co.uk

Re: Exciting plans for new theatre venue: an online survey
I've filled this out.
I can't believe this post hasn't had any comments! I'm excited about the possibility of having in the centre of the high street a really good theatre space, a cinema, a place for stand-up comedy (see the survey for other ideas).
Come on Sydenham. Come on traders, this is good for you too, especially the night time economy.
Wouldn't it be great if this was on the front page of the Sydenham Society website?
Please fill out the survey and share it. Get the word out, make it happen.

Me too, Lee. Although sit-down comedy is more my thing nowadays.leenewham wrote:I've filled this out.I can't believe this post hasn't had any comments! Re: Exciting plans for new theatre venue: an online survey
Please read my post again Rod. My first sentence clearly states I'm hoping to develop a new theatre space upstairs at the centre, whereas Lewisham are developing the whole building as a community-focused venue. My plans are now with the council, awaiting their response. Meanwhile, I'm gauging interest in my venture with this online survey, so nothing is set in stone as yet. Hope that clarifies?

Re: Exciting plans for new theatre venue: an online survey
I filled in the survey.
I'm someone who in principle would love a theatre space on the high street, but in practice almost never goes to the theatre (apart from, say, a Shakespeare or a Beckett once every few years).
I think a multi-arts space would be much more successful. A theatre space that put on live music, comedy, hosted visual arts exhibitions as well as theatre – this to my mind would be much more popular and successful.
I'll also add that – as seems to be always the case with Sydenham and Lewisham Council – they seem to keep everything so under wraps. How come I (and, presumably, others) weren't aware that Lewisham were actively soliciting for locals to use the space? Are there any notices about this at the centre itself? How are we supposed to find out about this kind of stuff?

Update: Thanks to everyone who has completed my survey. the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Lewisham Council are very enthusiastic about my plans, so watch this space for details about workshops, classes and theatre shows starting next Spring.
