Rubbish along the High Street

Post by sydres »

Walking up and down our High Street each day there appears to be a genuine need for larger bins to deal with the number of refuse bags left out for collection. The smaller bins simply aren't big enough....Lordship Lane and the main high street in Penge for example don't seem to suffer the same problem so what are they doing differently?

I live above the shops opposite the greyhound and we have no bins at all. The notice in our hallway actually instructs us to leave our bin bags out for collection by the lampost on the street.

I have seen a few blue bins up and down the high street, but with so many commercial properties, they will fill much quicker than they are emptied, even though there is a collection of rubbish 3 times a day (2 on Sunday).

I'm glad someone raised this.
I don't think that the high street is being policed adequately
I have seen cooking oil drums and raw meat disposed of in the Large Blue Bin at the top of Newlands Park.

There is a problem with foxes in the area who consistently rummage and spread rubbish around.
Leaving bags loosely in the street is therefore always going to cause a problem unless there are tight time controls (2 hour window) and swift pick up.

It would help if the fly tipping incidents were swiftly recorded and those caught named and shamed.
It would also help if the build work went ahead on the main road as this is becoming a fly tippers playground.
I also think the owner of the property at the top of Homecroft needs to get their act together and at least white wash the walls.
I feel a little sorry for them as their private space does become another fly tipping zone (needs clearing now) but they are not helping themselves or us by leaving their property in such a state.

I note that there were monies for some planting on Homecroft - is this an opportunity to engage with the owners.

Sorry drifted slightly off topic but I think it all feeds the general attitude to caring for our public spaces.
