Sydenham Park - former church/gym/No. 1

Post by syd parker »

Does anyone know what is happening with the two buildings at the Kirkdale end of Sydenham Park - the former church/Saints and Sinners gym/ now Cuddly Bear nursery and the abandoned building (1 Sydenham Park) next to it?

I notice both currently have planning applications under consideration that are long overdue for a decision to be reached.

The church is looking to extend its use as a nursery, if not approved it will have to revert back to former use - so a gym? What's happening there? As the nursery is already operating, why not approved already? I personally don't mind the nursery, but aware that some people may raise objections - although can't see a gym being an improvement for parking etc. Once there permanently, are they going to do anything to improve the appearance of the building? I guess there's nothing they can do about the dodgy rendering job but the cheap plastic stuff stuck to the fence is a bit of an eyesore.

1 Sydenham Park is an absolute disgrace with people dumping rubbish outside it. I see a skip is there now but I'm all for tidying it up. Again, why isn't Lewisham approving this? If they tidy the building up and a company can rent it as offices I can only see it being a vast improvement.

Does anyone know what's going on behind the scenes?

The nursery certainly does cause traffic problems as parents pull up where they feel like it leave their car to go and collect
Their children . The road is narrow enough without these issues .Perhaps the nursery could ask parents to be more considerate and safety concious.
With regards to rubbish being dumped in sydenham park all that are bothered by this , need to contact lewisham .The problem really started by the road sweeper collecting leaves and leaving them in bags there.
.The idea is they are picked up by the end of the day but invariably they aren't and sometimes stay there for a week . This in turn encourages people to just dump their rubbish there .in fact they kept on doing it on the corners of nearby roads and the same thing was happening and each morning rubbish would be dumped on top of them . I even witnessed a woman dragging her setee out of nearby flat to dump there.
We don't want a permanent skip there which would also
be an eyesore we want the council to clear their rubbish and to enforce fly tipping laws ! Keep on to them the more they get harassed the more
Likely they are to something about it !

So the nursery application has now gone to Pending Decision. Does this mean it goes to a committee? Still no sign of a decision for No.1.

I agree that parking on Sydenham Park is a nightmare. I regularly have people blocking my driveway and have to park on the street myself. You can drive the length of the street and not find a space, only to have nowhere to turn around, the road is so narrow. I fear getting my wing mirrors taken off parking on the road! So it's not just nursery drop offs but all the time. I'm not usually around at the times the parents would be there, but I have observed cars queueing to get into SP from Kirkdale because of cars blocking up the road outside the church building before now. Why can't the parents use the car park opposite (belonging to Church of the Resurrection), that's not in use on weekday mornings and afternoons? I'm sure an agreement could be reached.

The problem with rubbish dumping is that some of it is on private property. So it's creating an eyesore/vermin hazard but I don't think the council will have any power to deal with it under fly tipping laws. I agree people should report it if it's on the highway - frequently rubbish dumped on the pavement at the corner with Sydenham Park Road and at the bottom of Syd Park near the footbridge.
