I've just posted a list of sites in the borough with the lengths of their waiting lists / numbers of vacant plots.
As of now, I can't share a link to this, because it requires a log in which is shared via the allotment associations, but I'm going to ask if these posts could be opened up. In the meantime, anyone can use the icons on this map to find a plot, and by clicking in, get through to a contact form for the associations.
This wouldn't be me posting if there weren't some additional points I have in mind, the main one being that in this instance, I think LB Bromley does things very well, devolving power to allotment associations, and imposing on them no requirement to exclude people from outside the borough. I live in LB Lewisham, but my allotment is in LB Bromley - so the converse of what is likely to happen with residents of LB Bromley using the LB Lewisham supported Beckenham Place Park Golf Course. It's localism as it can be, with a municipality clearly in ultimate legal control, but not domineering.
I stress can because being on the committee of an allotment association takes time and effort - you do come up against difficult people - and there's only so much volunteers can be expected to do. LB Bromley has probably saved itself a fair bit in how much it's had to pay officers over years since it pioneered this form of localism, but in itself, this says nothing about localism being the future for delivering public services. Things need to be looked at case by case.
I hold no brief for LB Bromley, but we in LB Lewisham should be able to learn from it, as they should be able to learn from us.
