Help on ascending/descending posts please?

Can I set posts (via control panel?) to show latest post first across the board please? I see it can be done once a thread has been opened but can't figure out how to make it automatic across all threads.

I've done it via the user control panel, so threads open with last post at the top. It does it for all threads as long as I'm logged in. It's in 'edit display options', then select the direction you want for posts.
