The implication of that seems to be either that people should be allowed to park across other people's driveways, thus depriving the owners of access to their garages or other off- street parking, or that all dropped kerbs should be raised and people who currently have them should be forced to park in the road (thus taking up more space than they do at present.)Annie wrote:

I think Robin you need to read the begining of the thread,
I dared to state that people have the habit of parking outside my house when there is ample free parking across the road from me,which is all fencing.
I was slated by daring to suggest I would like to park outside my house.
The same selfishness that I apparently have displayed could also be said of people who have dropped kerbs.
Thats my point.I don't care who has them - good luck to them, but having said that I do think rainfall should be allowed to run off into the garden instead of down the drain.
Re: parking cpz's
Now, Annie. I did not slate you for wanting to park outside your own house. Your first post did not include all the relevant information. You are right that if the choice is between parking outside someone's house and parking against a wall or fence, the considerate thing to do is the latter. However, I do object to people generally parking outside other people's houses being called selfish.
Robin is right too - if someone has a dropped kerb so they can get into their drive, they are not parked on the road. So, 1 car parked on drive plus 1 dropped kerb (taking up less than a full space, but let's not quibble about that) equals zero change on the number of spaces available. I think what annoys you is that when the person is not parked on the drive, the space by the dropped kerb can still not be used. That does indeed remove a space from general use. However (again, pay attention to Robin's post) if the drop kerb was removed, it would force the drive owner onto the road permenantly. So, again, nothing achieved in increasing parking. All it means is that if you wanted to park outside thst house, you could. But then, is that not being decried here as selfish?

Re: parking cpz's
Cars and parking!
They are the cause of so many problems, especially when it is not uncommon for some
households to own 2 or 3 vehicles. Problem is that when early houses and roads were
planned and built this problem wasn't even a consideration. I suppose we have to get on
with things the best we can. Consideration is possibly the only way to avoid disputes.
I have to confess we have off road parking for 3 vehicles although we currently have 2
which are essential for my wife and myself to get to work in. I get called out at ridiculous
hours (3am not uncommon) at the drop of a hat so for me the car is essential. We also have
a dropped kerb to access our driveway. Most of the houses have similar, which is just as well
as the street parking would be totally inadequate. After years of parking problems in previous properties and walking a fair distance to get to the car, off road parking became a major consideration when buying property for us. CPZ's exist in our road which compounds the
problem unless you have off-road parking. Unfortunately modern life depicts the parking
demand and not us!
My understanding of planning and driveways was they were going to be restricted via
planning permission 'only' as the drains cannot cope with the additional rainfall that the
driveways create (similarly to building extensions). Don't know whether this was enforced.
One things for sure we can't wind the clock back to car/van-less roads.
Bring in CPZ's, see the parking problems get worse, then watch the amount of off-road
parking (driveways) increase (imho )!

It happened again last night, Hubby took 15mins to pick me up from somewhere around 10ish last night, and lo and behold someone jumped into our space outside our house! I would have no objections if it hadn't been for the fact that across the road was absolutely clear/space for at least 5 cars over there,
and thats the thing that so annoys me-inconsiderate parking, AND YES I KNOW ANYONE CAN PARK WHERE THEY LIKE! But for gods sake THINK about others before you do!
I beg to differ, see post above-it contains all the relevent info in my opinion.

No, again I said (keep up) I have no objections to kerbs etc, good luck to them, but if a drive owner had to park outside his house instead of in his drive then presumably he would not have total, sole, access to a space on the road? at some stage unless he never used his car he would vacate the space which would then be free for someone else?

Re: parking cpz's
Yes, I agree about the drop kerb making the space only available to the drive owner, and if you read my post more carefully you will see I make that point - that removal of the drop kerb would make the space more generally available.
With regards to your first post, you did not make it clear that the free space was not outside other poeple's houses - that's where the misunderstanding occurred. You made it clear subsequently and I agreed that it would in that case have been more considerate to park against the fence.
I have agreed with you on several points and have at no point called you selfish for wanting to park outside your own house. We would all rather do that if we could.
Do keep up.

Re: parking cpz's
Annie I agree that if by having a dropped kerb the owner is taking up one space 24/7 , whereas if they were parking in the street without dropped kerb would only be taking up a space when they are at home. This is not the same at all.

Re: parking cpz's
Good, so we all agree. That's the answer. Raise all dropped kerbs.
A happy Easter anyway.

But this is what you said earlier.
rshdunlop wrote:Honestly, it doesn't bother me. They have to park somewhere. If I get parked near the house, I look on it as a little bonus. I could get annoyed about it, but that won't change anything except my blood pressure.
were you just playing devils advocate, or, are you just a liar?
Either way Happy Easter.
Re: parking cpz's
I was being a little naughty, but not a liar. For the past few years we have had lots of building work being done and often have a skip and builder's lorry on the drive. So I have to park on the street. Along with the school staff. They like to nip in and take my space if I vacate it.

Re: parking cpz's
No, I was not caught out as I liar. I admitted I have off street parking. I also said I can't use it most of the time, so all the comments I made about parking near my house were true.
I conceded that your point about the parking outside your house was fair when you made it clearer about the fences opposite your house. I never called you a liar, or selfish. I misunderstood your first post, and said so. I conceded when you were right and I argued my point when I thought you were wrong.
If you don't want people to disagree with your opinion, don't post it online.
If you are spoiling for a fight, I'm not your woman.
And now I really will bow out.

I have no objection to posters not agreeing with what I post.

Re: parking cpz's
Perhaps it is best we let this matter drop although originally I was talking about the dire parking problems in roads near Sydenham station such as Venner or Homecroft.
Residents here would welcome the chanve to just park over the road as opposed to the next road but one.
