Re: Cash free buses
I am all for cash free buses. The odd person paying by cash can hold the bus up ages.
Most other large cities do not accept cash.

Re: Cash free buses
whatever happened to those bus ticket machines that were installed next to bus stops?
was it just the routes that bendy buses used that they were installed next to? They seem to have dissappeared.
if you want a cashless bus, then you need a way for people to purchase a ticket at the bus stop, when all the shops are closed.
simple solution - charge £1 for a 1 hour ticket - buy it from a bus stop ticket machine, get on a bus, show the driver. If you don't change buses, fine. if you do, show the next driver the same ticket. If the ticket issue time was within 1 hour of you getting on the bus, you should be allowed on. If it's a long journey, as long as you got on the bus within an hour of buying the ticket you are allowed to travel. allows long enough to get places if you need to change buses, but isn't so long that you can go somewhere, do shopping, and come back on the same ticket.
I believe that reasons against them are that paper tickets are expensive, and inefficient, and that having money in a box on the street is high risk for vandalism to steal the money inside.

Good idea but believe non starter due to cost of machines and as you say vandalism and theft.
How often not a convenience store nearby to get Oystercard.
People will soon get used to it.
