Last time the Council consulted on CPZs in Sydenham the majority didn't want to see them introduced. Main reason was displacement - if you put in on a few roads then you just move the problem on to other roads.

Shoppers in the high street have short term parking plus there is the free car park off Girton Road - but I agree it is annoying if you cannot park anywhere in the road where you live.

Parking Problems are one of many by-products of modern times unfortunately!

As you point out Chris; restrict parking in 'road A' and problem just moves along to the next
road, road B. This is a common occurance especially when close to stations or shopping areas,
etc. Large local (long stay) car parks can sometimes be an answer but can end up becoming
crime magnets.
CPZ's need to be carefully planned or maybe trialled with monitored results, not easy..

It happened again last night, Hubby took 15mins to pick me up from somewhere around 10ish last night, and lo and behold someone jumped into our space outside our house! I would have no objections if it hadn't been for the fact that across the road was absolutely clear/space for at least 5 cars over there,
and thats the thing that so annoys me-inconsiderate parking, AND YES I KNOW ANYONE CAN PARK WHERE THEY LIKE! But for gods sake THINK about others before you do!!!

Sorry rant over- :D

I agree but the 5 spaces free over the road , were they also in front of houses ?

If you only had to park over the road from your house you were lucky compared to many areas where you cannot park in the same street.

Something needs to be done.

For once I agree with Eagle - parking outside your house is no more or less inconsiderate than parking outside someone else's house. How were these people to know you would be back in fifteen minutes? Perhaps someone was parked outside their house. What exactly is it you require people to THINK (as you put it) before they legitimately and legally park in an empty space that just happens to be outside your house? What do you do when you visit elsewhere? Do you never, ever park outside a house on the off-chance that the homeowner might come back and prefer to use the space?

Woooh,that was harsh,
I had already said I know people can park where they wish!(unless you can't read of course?)
there are no houses opposite mine-all fencing, as I said space for up to 5 cars, there were none there, Why park outside mine? I'm just asking for a bit of consideration thats all.
And by the way-yes I do consider others before finding a parking space ( or should I say hubby does) and no, I wouldnt park outside a house if there were spaces to be had opposite.

Sorry Annie did not appreciate the 5 spaces opposite was not in front of any houses. That indeed changed the complexion.
Could be however that the offending car parked on your side as it wanted to be facing the direction of travel which is a legal requirement if one parks overnight.

I well remember when my parents lived in Dacres Rd. At 7am there were only one or two cars on both sides of the road covering about 20 houses ( as they all had garages or no cars ). By 8.30am you had to park way down Bampton Rd , near junction of Inglemere. These cars were there until the evening trains returned.
Very annoying , I suspect many of these selfish parkers have driven 10 or so miles to do the last leg by train

As I mentioned Venner Rd and Homecroft are a nightmare

Thank you Eagle,my objections were to rshdunlop not you.
The traffic on my street is both ways,
I have a back that doesnt get out of cars so easily these days, not a reason to have a disabled parking space, but good when people park considerately.

Fair enough. You didn't say tat that in your first post. I can read, but I'm not psychic.

I didn't ask if you were considerate when parking (am sure you and your husband are) just wondered if you never, ever park outside someone's house. For the record, if it had been me, I would have parked by the fence.

But why do you describe those drivers as selfish? If the only way to get to the station was to drive, what else were they supposed to do? I agree it can be annoying when people are parked on your road all day. I have staff from Forest Hill school parked outside my house from 8:30am to 4:30pm every day. Are they being selfish?

Honestly, it doesn't bother me. They have to park somewhere. If I get parked near the house, I look on it as a little bonus. I could get annoyed about it, but that won't change anything except my blood pressure.

Free car parking is one of the things I like about sydenham.

I can tell you that having lived with car parking zones they are a real pain in the ass if you want to have visitors and or tradesmen round and they DO NOT help you get a parking space, basically because the council issue way too many permits to raise the max possible revenues.

How do you feel about people who have a dropped kerb so they can park on the front of their houses?
Also taking away parking for other people.in effect they have a personal parking space outside their house.

I am 100% against dropped kerbs and turning front gardens into parking lots. It destroys the ambience of the area.

Concreting over front gardens is a disgrace to the Victorian and Edwardian builders who constructed most of the dwellings in the area

The point of a dropped kerb is not so that you can park on the road but so that you drive into your garage/carport/driveway /whatever. As cars are narrower than they are long, a drive entrance takes up less space on the kerb than a parked car.

That wasn't my point Robin,
you cannot park on a dropped kerb/entrance to driveway,it is still space taken up that other road fund payers could use.
Also, a lot of the time the owners of said properties park across/near their drive taking up even more space.

I totally agree with you Eagle, they are should only be allowed to have two lines of brick/or whatever they use, to just take the weight of the cars, the rest should be grassed etc,I thought Lewisham had policies on this? because of the rainfall?
