goonerchamp - it's nothing to do with the layout or being 'flavour of the month' or snobbery, it's about a gap in the market.

The comments here refer to sustainable fish and free range/organic meat. It doesn't look like Haji sell that kind of thing. That rules it out for a lot of people and explains why a new shop is of interest.

Why is that so annoying?

Exactly, I'd like to buy that kind of produce, I can't get it in Sydenham so I go elsewhere.

my comment re snobbery was directed toward the general points of view of many forum user - are you going to sit there and tell this is not the case? - I can trawl through the posts on the forum and prove you very wrong !

I notice we have a tapas bar opening where the mexican used to be - thats a new thing that we've never had in sydenham - but thats not being raved about - whys that ?

Really? I didn't know...went to the 'Mexican' place once and wasn't impressed so something new would be welcome.

There is also a new shop open called "Candi' which looks awful. Snobbery or simply they haven't really made an effort and therefore no-one really cares about it?

Is snobbery the new "just wanting things to be better?" or "at last, somewhere that sells stuff I want".

Hey Gooner

I ain't one of them, I like blue mountain, I like sugahill, I like Kente, I shop at the Greengrocers and think they are ace.

My thing with meat and the current butchers is, I don't believe I could ask where the meat comes from and they would be able to give me details on where the animal lived, and how it lived. I like good quality meat, but for meat to be good quality, in my eyes, it needs to have lived a good life when it was alive. That's why I but my meat at William Rose because they can tell me that, and I hope the new fishmongers/butchers will be able to do the same.

As I said, prove me wrong if you want...

Fishmongers in Sydders? Can't wait. Can only be great news. Like the name in previous post "Sole to Sole" OR my offering: "Sydenham Sole" even (p'raps a touch corny/fishy?) :D

Things certainly seem to be looking up for the high street. I've always been in favour of shopping local so this is a good thing. So am relieved that there will be a favourable addition to the high street in April. And I wish Hasan a happy retirement (of the cobblers).

And Tapas bar? (BTW - I'm always impressed by the dearth of news on this forum! ) If this turns out to be a good quality tapas bar, why bother going to CP or Honor Oak if I have a fab restaurant on my door step? Wonderful news :D

Have to say I am somewhat sceptical about the Tapas bar offering. Is this the place on the old Criterion Ices site? The one that opened as a Turkish then overnight became Mexican? New name, new signage, new menu but the same ownership and management. It takes a bit more for that if you plan to do Tapas. The staff perhaps managed to pull off changing nationality from Turkish to Mexican overnight with relative ease, they may find becoming Spanish a bit more challenging. Look forward to seeing the life sized statue of a Mexican bandit being replaced by one of a bullfighter soon, because, obviously; authenticity can only be achieved by reference to blindingly obvious racial stereotypes.

I'm still unsure as to why the Meze place decided to re-invent itself...twice.

Firstly, they're to be commended for renovating the decrepit old Criterion Ices site. I enjoyed the Meze every time I went in. It was almost as good as Lokal (RIP). It was always busy, food was great, nice to sit in air-con cool on a hot Summer evening. I got take-away also many times which was equally as good. Maybe there's not enough margin in Meze.

Edit: Perhaps there's your answer...I hardly went near the place in the Winter but was always there in the Summer. It's no good having a 4month-of-the-year restaurant.

It was just too vulgar from the outside when they Mexican'd it up and I promised myself I'd never go in. I stuck to it. A Tapas bar? Well, if they're serious, I'll give it a whirl. However, they might want to think about removing the Mexican having a siesta next to the cactus from their sign...

Not especially Iberian, methinks.

Another possible name for the fishmongers:

POLLOCKS

Having lots of fun at work about this. Other suggestions were:

Oh my cod!
In the name of cod.
The Codfather.
For Cods Hake.

If only Kane was a more popular fish we could have had "Syddersin Kane"...

Good job I never sought a career in signwriting!

I'm finding this thread encouraging, however speaking to Meena (Mrs Greengrocer) today, she was quite unaware of this conversation going on. In fact she was quite amused when I mentioned people were discussing a website! It was all news to her, but she mentioned she'd be in touch with Lee soon....

It just proves to me how easy it is to suggest ideas on forums like this, rather than approach people direct and speak to them face to face.

Yes, counters should open soon. I met with him last week. Look out for some what if's coming soon. Really good guy, he is really switched on and knows what he's doing. I was really impressed.

It should be a real asset in our high street.
