Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
I think I can probably manage not to buy anything in there quite easily: after all, I've managed with the Penge branch ever since it's been open - and that doesn't have any other alternatives in the immediate vicinity
Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
Could not believe article , I think in Observer or Telegraph, this morning, which states that Tesco actively advertising job vacancies in Polish.
If so this is an utter disgrace. All British jobs should be advertised in English only, excepting areas where Welsh and Scot's Gaelic spoken.
Apparently Next have been doing the same thing.
I am going to mail both companies for an explanation or denial. Cannot boycott Tesco as never go there. Also never go to Next.
Shame Shame Shame.

I think this means you are boycotting them ...Eagle wrote:Cannot boycott Tesco as never go there.
Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
Well yes Tim . Last time I visited a Tesco was about 3 weeks ago , but did not purchase a thing. Was the new one near the all days stinkers.
Before that well over a year.
I would boycott them if I could.
As for Next , probably 3 or so years. As far as I know they sell clothes and why would one go any where else than Marks and Spencer.
I think their alleged policy of advertising in Polish only an absolute disgrace . They should not even be advertising in Polish as well as English.......
We owe it to our unemployed to take what action we can.

The founder of Tesco was the son of a Polish immigrant.

I'm surprised you're not saying that the unemployed owe it to us to make themselves employable.Eagle wrote:We owe it to our unemployed to take what action we can.

HB
I cannot see the relevance of your comment.
The article stated that Tesco and Next both opened new distribution centres advertising only in Poland . Surely you are not saying this is good and right?
I am astounded that you seem to be turning this into a race issue when it is nothing of the sort.
Tim
You also have misunderstood. I did not say the unemployed should be made employable by us. I simply said they should be allowed to apply and hopefully secure jobs available in the UK. They cannot do so if not advertised here at all.

Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
Eagle - Can you point to any link or article that proves that Tesco are advertising only in Poland or Polish? A cursory glance on the internet finds only political posturing by Labour. Here is the link: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013 ... eap-labour
I can find nothing to back up your claim. The article does say that they are employing large numbers of Eastern European migrants because they have found it difficult to employ local people in Dagenham (the distribution plantin question) although they have just employed 350 British people there. Poor old Chris Bryant couldn't even get the location of the site correct it seems.
It's almost as if you saw a headline and half read an article and started foaming at the mouth before you dug any deeper.

Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
As u are aware HB I am not a great fan of the workers party. However the article does say they employed people in Eastern Europe.
The very idea that there are not enough Britons to work anywhere in the Uk in a distribution centre is blatantly stupid.
I agree as started by Labour ( I believe the same gent who left the infamous message at the treasury that no money left), I will reserve judgement until clarified . I am sure it will be in a day or two.
Perhaps we to better hold fire until that moment.

Take that as a "no" then, shall I? So if no evidence emerges that Tesco are advertising jobs only in Poland and in Polish you will be on here in a "day or two" with a clarification?Eagle wrote:As u are aware HB I am not a great fan of the workers party. Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
If that is so HB I will admit that part is incorrect.
Just heard discussion on Sky news about it. Seems no doubt Tesco brought workers from Poland. Their excuse is for seasonal work.
I do agree we need a lot of clarification. I do not believe either of us has the full facts. Let us wait until then.
I do object , by the way , to advertising jobs in a foreign language in Britain.

I am with you fully . The trouble with the liberal position is that it cannot really tell when it is speaking about overseas aid, equal opportunities or economic migration . It only knows that is wrong to criticise anything that other liberals could translate into racism.
Indigenous working people in this country have no protected characteristics so it seems to be ok to imply they are either lazy, stupid or unwilling to work .
We cannot give up on unemployed people in this country - we either invest in job creation , training or education but we should not try to fill vacancies by targeting others from Europe or beyond . No slight intended to Poles or whoever else . If I were a Pole living in Poland I would be saying the same but in reverse - presumably nobody would be classing me as lazy or unemployable in that instance ?
Good evening
Nigel

I know France for instance has an open market for Eastern Europeans , but wonder how many French companies do not discriminate in favour of natives.
Nigel. Thanks for your support. I do wonder sometimes why these liberal do gooders are so desperate to attack any proposal to help native workers , or non workers.
On the particular case of Next and Tesco. If Mr B proved wrong then they should sue him. Simples.

What in God's name are you two blithering on about?
Eagle has accused Tesco of advertising jobs in Polish and Poland, excluding British people and the English language. He is unable to back up this claim of course. Who is suing who and what does "the Liberal position" or the definition of an immigrant or whether we should support unemployed British people have to do with it? Is it a full moon tonight?

Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
I don't know the full facts about Tesco, especially employment at their new warehouse in Dagenham, but
this definitely needs further investigation. I feel that when a big company makes big profits from any area
then it should return help / employment to that area. I can't believe that Tesco cannot find people to employ
in Dagenham on at least on minimum wages. Pretty obviously companies who do practise 'low pay' schemes
to visa holders, etc could always come up with this obvious defense argument!

possible and that economically we have little choice due to ever rising costs to us of unemployment. It also worries
me that we may be subsidising low paid workers wages to boost company profits. The balance has to be a fair one!

Totally agree with Nigel because I feel that we have a duty in our country to help the unemployed into work whereNigel wrote: We cannot give up on unemployed people in this country - we either invest in job creation , training or education but

Read the article Bradford FFS. They have employed 350 people from the local area.

The principle or possibility of companies encorouging any such practise should be debated. The point I was making!
Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
Bradford - It looked like you were implicitly criticising Tesco for not employing local people, something which I have shown to be false. If you weren't then fair enough.

Re: Tesco Sydenham Road Now Open
This ones worth a gander too:
http://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/tesco ... 56152.html
Seems that the facts are still uncertain! Workers have complained - alledgedly about having to take wage cuts to
move to a new distribution warehouse (up to £8000 in some cases) - Don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't
be too happy about this. The guy on the channel 4 news tonight states that he now has a 60 mile round trip to
work and back (new distribution centre) and landed an £8000 pay cut as a bonus!
Of course he could always be making this up?
This needs to be investigated (along with Next plc)..

If it was the above bit then where have I implicitly critised Tesco?14BradfordRoad wrote:I don't know the full facts about Tesco, especially employment at their new warehouse

I still believe that to be fair to all this needs further investigation to clarify rather than reports from invested
parties.
