I'm struggling to remember from my hazy early 1960's childhood memories. I remember Whitrods, and my Nan getting me sweets from a shop just down from the pub.. Was there a Greengrocers down by Bradford Road somewhere? Oh and a bakery on the opposite side of the road to Whitrods - ISTR they had a 3 wheeled van. I also recall a guy who had a lot of scrap cars on some rough ground at the lower end of Wells Park Road roughly opposite Halifax St.
My Nan was a home help just before her retirement and I think maybe she had "clients" in Bradford Road and Oaksford avenue. On Retirement she moved from Tynwald House to a new flat in Cornmill Lane Lewisham - Just down from a new Safeways store the site of which is now a roundabout.

Re: Wells Park Road shops
After The Duke Of Edinburgh there was a ladies hairdressers, which closed down late 1972-I'm pretty sure- and became the 'new' Rays' Newsagents/Sweet Shop,as his original shop further down Wells Park Rd.(opposite Mylis Close) had closed down and was due for demolition along with the rest of the shops down there. This had been one of my local childhood sweet shops, along with Adams near the Talma on the same side, which, ike all the shops on that side had just been demolished about then or slightly earlier(72' I think) So the new Rays Sweet Shop became my nearest Newsagent/Sweet Shop as I lived in Oaksford Ave.
After Rays, the next shop was a butchers, then Silver Willow, which sold pots and pans, mops buckets and that sort of thing and then the Spar shop.Incidentally, the old Silver Willow shop sign was revealed just last year when the modern Spar were putting their new sign up.

Re: Wells Park Road shops
In about 1940 at 3 The Parade, Wells Park Road, there was a general store called Brookes' Stores which was run by my grandparents. I have an old photo of the shop which has now had the shop front bricked up and has been converted into two flats. Does anybody remember this shop and my grandparents?
