Deadline approaching in battle to save The Windmill

EUSSR
OK I accept your right in this country to say most things you want to.
I just think when people like Mary doing their best , it is not helpful to make such comments.

Another way of making the same point is that 0.1% of people in Sydenham seek to use the coercive power of government to impose their preferences on the other 99.9%.Zarathustra wrote: Change happens either because of the MARKET which does its cold, Darwinist thing until we get sensible and regulate, or because people like Mary, whether you agree with her or not, DO THINGS. 99.9% of people in Sydenham do nothing. So they will always have decisions made for them, but that's their choice.
Consciously or not, they would appear to embody an ideology of the "Will to Power", which I do realise some people find attractive.

I thought that Lewisham had a turnout at general elections of about 54% rather than 0.1%. So I would conclude that more than half of adults seek to use the power of elections to impose their preferences via the coercive power of government.Tim Lund wrote:Another way of making the same point is that 0.1% of people in Sydenham seek to use the coercive power of government to impose their preferences on the other 99.9%.

The Anti-Christ, Zarathustra, the will to power - whatever have you been reading, Tim?
Re: Deadline approaching in battle to save The Windmill
Rod's the one who admires Nietzsche, who I do realise is terribly, terribly misunderstood. As Michael correctly points out, the Ubermenschen round here are not just the likes of Mary, but may extend to up to 54% of the electorate. But that assumes that all of these vote in order that our reprepresentatives should control what we can buy on our high streets. Untermenschen such as I would be happy with an update on the water leak on Silverdale.Robin Orton wrote:The Anti-Christ, Zarathustra, the will to power - whatever have you been reading, Tim?

Whether he does or not, I do. When I'm finally invited on to Desert Island Discs (there's obviously been some sort of administrative incompetence at the BBC) and I'm asked about my Book, it'll be a toss-up between Thus Spake Zarathustra and Newman's Apologia pro Vita Sua.Tim Lund wrote:

Just think how you'd all enjoy to have a pub to sit debating this face to face over a drink or three ... couldn't do that in Sainsbury's.

Thank you for calling us (or should I say me?) to order, Mary.

I should be very sorry if Ram's closed. It is the only general store/small supermarket that I know of in Forest Hill/upper Sydenham where you always get courteous, cheerful and friendly service. All the others seem run by people who never smile and never seem to want to talk to you.

Well either you've misunderstood or I have misunderstood, or he has changed his mind. Whatever the truth is we shouldn't speculate on such things until the facts are known. People's livelihoods are at stakeparker wrote:Richpickings, that is most certainly not what he said to me, bringing it up in conversation like it sounds you did isn't probably going to be the best way to unearth what his plans are. A few polite words to one's fellow humans must be a good thing EUSSR . But maybe you are one of those miserable people who never say hello to anyone.
How sad,
How sad,

I agree with EUSSR totally. I designate 3-5 minutes for a trip to an Express store. In, out, bang bang. I'm usually too busy needing to get to work or be at any other place than Sydenham to socialise. However if they strike up conversation I will pleasantly reply.

Interesting handle (EUSSR) considering the highest number of MEP's are Conservative

I acknowledge your point about those who are too busy for pleasantries .
As far as I know no terminal illnesses have been cured this week so I presume they are deluding themselves about how urgent their petty callings are.
For those misguided types there should be an unending express queue leading to an automatically till saying " unknown antisocial shopper in bagging area " on a continuous loop.
Despite my own onerous and grave duties I always find time to wish you , and affable coves of your ilk
A very good afternoon

At least two shops I regularly use in Sydenham have Romanians on the till, which I know because they are the sort of people who it's nice to chat to; hardworking too.
Re: Deadline approaching in battle to save The Windmill
Tim
I appreciate your Romanian shop assistants were friendly , as all shop assistants should be.
Interesting how they obtained work permits which until Jan 01 are only meant to be issued to Romanians when no UK national available to do the work.
Considering the number of unemployed in the locality , this to say the least is very strange.

Re: Deadline approaching in battle to save The Windmill
When I said 'never seem to want to talk to you', I didn't mean 'never seem to want to have a prolonged conversation when there is a long queue of people fuming behind you', but 'never seem to want to exchange cheerful greetings, plus, if there is time, a few words about the weather.'
Phatic communication of that sort is very important to us socially isolated old people with time on our hands.
