We've been asked for examples of where an A3 development with associated housing has produced fast food outlets and take aways. Frankly, south London is littered with so many instances of this happening that I won't bore you with too many lists. Just keep your eyes open next time you walk down practically any high street.
But to see this on our doorstep, you only have to walk down the road to the former Man of Kent. Here a pub has recently been closed, new flats built upstairs (good news, we're all for extra housing). But what's coming in place of the pub? It's a business calling itself the "Premium Snack Bar".
Point proven?
Let me make it clear I am not against cafes and snack bars. I eat in them a lot. Good luck to the people who are running this new business. But it's hardly the diversity of businesses we are all looking for in the high street. In fact this new business stands on one corner of Hazel Grove, whilst on the other corner facing it is Cafe Gold! Two identical businesses right next to each other. You can't get less diverse than that!
I believe that the point being made by Nasaroc is that the hope that A3 use will bring in good alternative businesses when taking over a pub building seldom come good in practice.
This new business is opening up on an ex pub site less than 400 yards from the Greyhound itself. What greater example do you want?
The Greyhound to Close!
I have some observations to make about the new grey wooden panel fencing around the site.
I am making a comparison with the Buxton Homes site on the corner of Willow Way and Kirkdale.
Yesterday I noticed wooden panelled fencing (approx 7 feet high) all around the Greyhound. Grey wooden panels were also fixed over windows.
The site owner may say:
We've secured the site from intruders
sceptics may comment:
The panelling doesn't afford any views of site activities
The grey panelling is a blank canvas for graffitti
It shrouds the site in a grey forboding cloak, which will make the site unattractive.
There are no visible notices on the wooden fence - unlike the Buxton site which was sealed in white painted hoardings (with blue trim), had large signs informing people of the identity of the site owner and the Planning Appplication.
(I would attach photographs i have taken, but am unsure how to attach them to these posts)
It's not unexpected, but it's extremely distasteful. Is this part of a carefully orchestrated Milford Homes strategy? I would be unsurprised to see some vague proposals waved in front of the Council in order to start site clearance work. What may happen afterwards is anyones guess. Having seen some of Milford Homes most recent developments, I remain unconvinced that they can provide a replacement development of any quality on the Greyhound site. Until they can provide that assurance, i will be opposed the the demolition of the Greyhound.

Anbody closely following this thread may notice I have removed my posting made earlier today and all followup postings.
This has been done for a legal reason. I hope all will be revealed in a few days and I hope you will then agree it was done in the best interests of Sydenham. For those who know what was here - please keep it to yourself until you get the nod here ...

Was it the posting where you said you was going to chain yourself naked to the roundabout at Cobbs Corner............
<admin edit>
Nope - me naked would be a more terrible sight than The Greyhound flattened. As for the lady you mentioned. Remember Lady G's progress through Coventry? All gentleman averted their eyes. Perhaps that is why you no longer see her here!
I'm now closing this thread until we get more news.
