Zanzibar Public Meeting: 14th August

Post by admin »

Councillor Chris Best has asked me to put up this poster advertising the public meeting on Thursday week.

She has also asked me to put a link to two posters put up by a Zanzibar promoter which was seen by some residents as offensive and was put on windscreens of cars near the venue. One complainant was a family man and found this pornographic and horrified that his child had lifted off the windscreen.

The flyposting Chris mentioned at the last meeting is attached and these posters were put up opposite Sydenham library advertising this evening.

Current examples of what the new management is taking bookings for.

This poster is also available as a downloadable pdf if you wish to print off some copies to distribute:

Pound to a penny this place will still be up running and making a nuisance of itself this time next year.

Its untouchable.

You all know why.

The posters may be ok for the likes of Soho, I don't think they are appropriate for family oriented Sydenham, I hope Sydenham are united in shutting down the Zanzibar club, or at the very least have its closing hours reduced to 2am, which hopefully will discourage club goers from afar attending.

Thank you Councillor Chris Best.

I fully support the family man you mentioned and fully agree with him that this is completely inappropriate material.

I won't be able to make the meeting, so hopefully others will be able to pass on my support for the residents.

Anyone not directly affected, who wants to be aware what Sydenham families are suffering should read the following news. All the people of Sydenham should unite behind the residents.

Please don't be taken in by Zanzibar's empty promises of a better future. Notice the word "is" below!!!

It will be an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE if this place is not completely shut down!

However from their publicity would not recommend for Mother's Union or Women's Institute. Noticed Vodka bottle in unexpected place.

As above, the flyers are a further unsavoury nuisance to residents. Frankly pornographic, after club nights they are littered up and down the surrounding streets in their multitude, to quite a far distance from.the club, likely discarded by the punters returning to.their cars.

They are just further testament to the disregard that the establishment and clientele has for or neighbourhood. There is nothing beneficial that I see this club has brought to the area, it should be closed down and the.space used for something positive for the community.

I can only reiterate what others have said about the change in management...there is absolutely no improvement.. In fact there is now the added nuisance of music and djs voice carrying out of the club...so much for sound proofing

Why is there yet another public meeting? There was one the other week, why another instead of actually doing something about it?

I'm not sure exactly what Conker was thinking but I guess it just might have been something relating to political correctness.

Probably nowhere near what was on Conker's mind, but I imagine, using left-wing PC philosophy, in this situation you would have "Nocturnals" which would be considered a minority group who require "equality". As they are being marginalized and discriminated against, the majority need to be positively discriminated against to reach this equality. That means, when the Nocturnal finally gets home and goes to sleep and then gets woken up at 11am by someone mowing their lawn, he has as much right to complain and silence them as someone who gets woken up at 5am by him. Any complaining Diurnals then become "intolerant bigots". A new hate law is made to criminalize "Nocturnalphobia" and anyone who makes fuss about being woken up at night would have the police on their doorstep in minutes.

How many meetings do the Council need to know that this venue is not wanted in its present form.....

The issue, as has been stated, is that it's inappropriate to have a nightclub in a quiet residential area like Sydenham. With the best will in the world, no amount of new policy-making is going to change that. All the time it remains there will inevitably be conflict - surely for the benefit of all concerned it would be better if it were closed down and relocated somewhere more central and less suburban, where it would not be disturbing people on a regular basis.

Is there a petition anywhere, where local feeling could be expressed and quantified about this? I'd sign straight away and many of my neighbours and friends feel the same. Oh, and yes, those flyers are wildly offensive on any number of levels.

This is clearly an organisation which doesn't care what people think. Since the last public meeting which the manager attended things have got worse not better. Last night it was impossible to sleep from 4 until gone 5.30 because of crowds of people congregating at the top of Spring Hill. No security any where near. No effort to make a difference.
Is it because they know they are going to lose in court or they are so confident they hold their neighbours in deep contempt?
This club needs shutting and a reduction in hours is no longer enough.

I agree 100%.

I cannot understand whilst awaiting an appeal they can carry on their riotous and antisocial behavior.

I know Eagle - it would seem the law is on the side of the perpetrator - utter madness! The law is an ass as they say!

EXTRACTS FROM "NOISE AND THE LAW":- (Might be able to help in our crusade!!)

..."It is an offence to operate a motor horn when the vehicle is stationary unless there is danger from another vehicle. Furthermore, a moving vehicle cannot sound its horn in a restricted road between 11.30 pm and 7 am. A restricted road is lit by lamps placed not more than 200 metres apart. The majority of urban roads are, therefore, restricted roads".

The Noise sufferer and the law." ... However, people should not suffer in silence (or should that be bedlam). The law offers some form of protection against those who deliberately or unwittingly create noise. We only have to examine the increase in complaints to the local environmental health departments to show that people want something done. The government has for it's part been increasingly mindful of the social effects of noise on the general public. For instance, if people are unable to get a good nights rest they ..."

The Noise Act 1996 "was introduced to outlaw those who have little or no respect for peace and quiet from 11pm to
7am... Public nuisance has, therefore been re-vitalised as a legal means to defeat the noisy... Remember that Public Nuisance is a crime"

Dear Chris Best, (ward councillor elected by the local residents of Sydenham)

Respectfully, I would ask why you consider 2 am to be an appropriate closing time for the Zanzibar? Does this mean you support your local constituents being woken up at 2 am by the commotion, pandemonium and obnoxious behaviour from our out-of-borough night-time visitors? I can't believe for a moment that you do, but I am stumped as to why you are not supportive of your many constituents who would prefer an outright ban of the club. It may be that you have evidence that many local residents support its functioning:- you, personally, may be supportive of the club; or there may be other reasons for prolonging our nocturnal disturbance every Friday and Saturday night. I would be interested to know.

Sorry, I don't mean to appear critical, but knowing the rationale behind your decision may help me understand the situation better, although, of course, won't do anything to restore a good night's sleep to me and many other local residents each Friday and Saturday night.

Respectfully yours.

I am sure we all agree with you. 2am not a great time to be woken up. I suggest The Councillors move next door to this nasty so called attraction.

I would hope someone has taken ample film footage of these events?

you cannot argue with evidence on film whereas there will be plenty of verbal rebuttal and denial from the other side.
It'd be hard for them to film a peaceful exit of their patrons from the sound of it.
