Egos and Agression
I took a break from this site but thought i might come back to see how things were moving on. Not much unfortunately...
The problem is that the site is full of huge egos constantly clashing...trying to be cleverer or more eloquent in their arguments than the other.
A lot of what i read is nothing short of bullying and I'm sure that any new person visiting would be immediately put off staying or participating in any discussion for fear of being stomped on.
Perhaps a few deep breaths and a short walk around the block might help.
A virtual bucket of water over you all....you know who you are..

Re: Egos and Agression
Well said. I rarely contribute to posts as I fear I will be ridiculed for having an interest or opinion. So I read posts, sometimes ask for advice but leave it there. Am sure many others feel the same
Re: Egos and Agression
It's a shame, this forum is the best I have found, yet it will fail if used for egos rather than everyday chat / discussions.
I enjoy a "chat" on here, but I can't be bothered with all the "look at this and that" posts,
Please don't be put off the board, we all need a break now and again when it gets heated, but you could always put certain posters on "ignore"

Re: Egos and Agression
Some of the trolling on this site is very poor. Thankfully admin set up a sub forum so said troll could post on their favourite subject. Whenever challenged the troll - classic cyber activism - avoids the posts/questions.
Re: Egos and Agression
It's just that sort of post that puts people of MWAV, just because you disagree with everything that said poster posts you label that poster a Troll, but that's just what you come across as.
Re: Egos and Agression
Well said Steve. I also refrain from posting as threads quickly become derailed. Feels more like a private chat room at times!
Re: Egos and Agression
Well said Annie and many thanks for your usual words of wisdom.
I note with amusement that you say the editor set up a sub site for this so called troll.
Just take a quick look at the recent entries on this sub site and who started each subject.
An own goal MWAV.
Steve is correct a lot of posters have strong views and if they did not doubt if they would be posting . However we must always be polite to everyone.

Re: Egos and Agression
Yes, we must.
I'm agreeing with you eagle. Points of view are good, being aggressive isn't.
Let's hug. Again.
Go on eagle, I know you want to...

Re: Egos and Agression
Yes I must agree with the original post.
I'm a regular reader of this forum, and have been for 2 years. It's a great source of information about our area from people who obviously care and have a interest in
Sydenham.
However, I've never been brave enough to post any of my thoughts or opinions for fear of ridicule!
Perhaps I'll man up one day and get involved. Need to swallow a dictionary first though!

Re: Egos and Agression
If all the people who are reluctant to post actually did so, the tone of the forum would change, no? It's a bit one-note because it's mostly the same few people (and yes, I know I'm one of them!). In the words of Adam Ant: Ridicule is nothing to be scared of.
Re: Egos and Agression
That worries me more than you. People move away or say all they want to say so without an influx of new posters any forum dies. Our two neighbouring forums are in steep decline and I (and I hope most Sydenhamites) wouldn't wish STF to follow.Ghlpc wrote:However, I've never been brave enough to post any of my thoughts or opinions for fear of ridicule
People post because other people have posted. Controversy means more posts by more people (see the Greyhound thread) so while some of it may be intensely annoying to some people - the alternative is a slow death.
Frank and open debate between old hands can appear intimidating. They know each other and dishing out can expect to be dished in return. That doesn't apply to people they do not know or who would not be accepting of any aggressive comment. That's the rule and I am here to apply it.
An analogy is what happens on Newsnight or the Today programme. Old professional politicians and media hands can and will be savaged by the likes of Paxman and Humphreys - and quite rightly so. However the tone changes when people unused to the media or who do not engage in controversy appear. They are treated with courtesy and effort is taken to help them state their case.
And so it should be here. And it mostly is. when there are exceptions I try and have a quiet word. So do feel free to join in the fray and have some fun. It is not in anyone's interest to freeze 'newbies & lurkers' out. Quite the opposite you are our future.
May I welcome you here and assure you that there is always someone to appeal too (by PM preferably) if you are feeling you are not being treated fairly or unkindly. I cannot promise miracles but I do try.

Re: Egos and Agression
Try not to worry about the unnecessarily compllcated words that some use on here,
because it really doesn't make anyone bigger or better! Most of us haven't a clue what
they're on about anyways because we only speak plain English, it's still the best way of
expressing yourself!
All points of view should be welcome..

I agree 14BR
Politeness to other members at all times. That may encourage new members onboard.

Incorrect on evry point. I deal in cold facts not opinions based on biased media nonsense. I've been on chatrooms/forums for 17 years and trolls are easy to spot.Annie. wrote:It's just that sort of post that puts people of MWAV, just because you disagree with everything that said poster posts you label that poster a Troll, but that's just what you come across as.

Re: Egos and Agression
I post those threads to show YOU that what you read in the Telegraph/Mail/Express is made up nonsense. You were the one starting ALL the threads about benefits BEFORE the sub forum was started. It was started because of YOUR trolling. You constantly posted about benefits, immigration, negative subjects. Want me to bump a few?Eagle wrote:Well said Annie and many thanks for your usual words of wisdom.

Your foutrage and faux politeness is hilarious though.

MWAV, Here we go again!
Just your opinion is correct? Sorry I forgot your rules.

Hi Annie
Despite the call for politeness on this forum , it is very sad that a certain gentleman has a problem with this.
Guess we will have to be tolerant as this is the adult thing to do.
Welcome to any new members.
