Neither are run by professionals, but by locals who give a damn. Many markets are very well run, although Camden has been ruined in recent years by over development and the stables feels like an expensive mall now. Portabello's popularity is starting to kill it too with brands creeping in. Greenwich is well run, but developers destroyed one of the markets there to build flats and housing, all of which is expensive.

I think it's worth trying something new. It might not work, there are no guarantees, but not doing ANYTHING is pointless. But I'd rather local traders etc have a greater say in their high streets than outside companies who may not have their best interests at heart.

Yes - it would certainly be worth me knowing more about these other successful markets, although managing markets will not be as complex as Town Centrre management, mainly because it will be easier to experiment to find the right mix for an area. But when decisions are about what gets built, and leases granted for 15 years plus, you'll have to be more long term, and it will matter more to get things right the first time.

Do West Norwood Feast and Brixton Market have well known 'go to' people who can make quick decisions, and respond constructively to proposals - or do they have more complex governance, with committees, Board of Trustees, etc.? Apart from the satisfaction of doing a good job, how are their managers rewarded? Are they part owners? Are they people who dream of going on to greater things in retail management? Are they salaried, pensioned Council employees?

New sign going up at the shop opposite The Woodman/Wooster & Stock today- "Cash Brothers Consortium". I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like a Money Lender place.

I had a look at this this afternoon. It seems to be a sort of second-hand junk (or do I mean 'antique'?) shop rather than a money lender. I agree that the sign isn't very attractive.

I concur. They were setting up yesterday and looks like mainly bric-a-brac, they had a selection of second-hand DVDs for instance. Do people still buy physical DVDs? Anyway, I'm suitably excited about the other new additions - a smart wine bar and a french deli <remains optimistic>

This is a brick a brace shop we did in Streatham. They don't have to look like the one in Kirkdale, and this signage was cheap (the name is made out of found old shop letters and some vinyl lettering).



We did a whole load of shops in Streatham. working with Beep Studio in Forest Hill, and we have just completed a load more in West Norwood.

Shame we couldn't get this shop to remove the clutter or bars from the windows though!

The doll and teddy bear hospital type shop was open yesterday. I have a patient for them. He is hoping for a new growler.

Just to clarify. That's the yellow shop Eagle is referring to, not the doll hospital, which is on the site of Syd's Vintage and which I've just been in and is lovely.

It makes me think back to my first posting on this forum….and that was about shop signage in Sydenham, and the historic wooden sign uncovered for about 12 hrs on 3 Sydenham Road a few months back (see pictures on links below)….

If only people could take inspiration from this….
