WHAT SHOPS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE HIGH STREET
Our High Street
I'd like a bigger WH Smith. The one here is cramped, has fewer stock of larger items found in larger stores and is somewhat subject to chaos and confusion if more than a handful of browsing customers choose to be chew through some mags or books.
I can't see Asda opening here as Sainsbury have a large footprint in Sydenham, plus some smaller sites at Penge & Beckenham.
There are far too many grubby run-down Pound shops, cheapo bargain basement rubbish and (un)fancy goods.
What about a good old fashioned Pie & Mash shop?
The High Street needs to be modernised but in a quaint way by keeping most of it's original features. A facelift is in order.
I 'd personally like to see a 24 HR Quality Bakery with Quality Coffee Shop open up. My wife however is keeping me on a strict No-Nice things diet, so just as well!

A pie and Mash shop would be great. I like the one in Greenwich. It's not expensive either so everyone would feel able to go occasionally. And I agree with a post about a decent chippie - with freshly cooked fish, which is not too greasy.
The people in greenwich who owned the pie and mash shop also owned the building. They just sold up as it (the building) was a worth a HUGE sum of money.
It didn't close due to bad business.

The Gourmet Burger company that has taken over is actually very good quality but its VERY expensive.

I thought Godards had to move as rental had gone up. didn't think they owned the building. It was a great place. Will have to go and check out Deptford.
I remember when we had a fishmongers on the high street. I also remember a sports shop and a picture framing business in Sydenham. I am presuming those places closed due to lack of interest. Does anyone remember the great butcher that used to be at the top of Kirkdale? Can't remember the name but I am pretty sure it was mainly organic and free range stuff and we're talking about 15 years ago now. I think the opening of Savacentre dented its income and then the "beef on the bone" situation killed it off.
We use the Halal butcher on the high street sometimes but I always get cross in there because they seem so grubby. I can't understand that the fruit and veg shop get told off for not putting the country of origin on their applies yet in the butchers their clothes are dirty, they cut meat and then handle money and then cut meat and shake hands with people etc without washing their hands. I like the idea of the old fashioned sweetie shop. I recently had a look round the old chemist and whoever suggested it for a shop had a great idea. It's actually a really big space as downstairs there are 2 big rooms with shower facilities and a little kitchenette. The amount of rent they want though is ridiculous.

Re Woolworths: for interest, there was one about 25 years ago. They rationalised later (quick turnover goods only) though not sure of their direction now the Net has made music and videos "slow sellers".
Shops have to survive: There was a fantastic art shop (just down past Lidl) which closed a couple of years ago. A great shame, but such goods are hardly weekly budget essentials.
I doubt we'll get a fishmonger, fish scarcer and about twice the price of meat (presumably why the last one gave up). Elsewhere, a van came up from Hastings twice a week, and I wouldn't mind one of those - perhaps a space could be found in the Garton Road car park, or the pub car park next to Syd Station road?
There is virtually everything (bar posh clothes maybe) available in the shops we have, once you get to know what they sell or will order for you and I wonder if peeps should do a reconnoitre to remind themselves of what we already have?
For example, the Curtain shop re-started their haberdashery range a while back, the "pound shops" really don't just sell buckets and Syd DIY sells (can order) virthually anything, plus there's the v.good plumbing shop towards Lower Sydenham. I've started doing some shopping at MFC3 (food store near the library), very good, clean helpful etc.
I agree the high street looks a bit tatty, but as plans are afoot for improvements that everyone wants, I'll hang fire on that aspect.

Hiya, I'm from East Dulwich, and live in Sydenham. I post a lot on the http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/index.php, because most of my friends live down there so it is where I tend to go out.
Obviously over the years I've seen ED and Lordship Lane particularly change a lot, but the fact is, you'll never please everyone. There are people that hate the idea of a chain opening on their twee little highstreet, just as there are those who would love nothing more than an M&S.
I really like living in Sydenham, but I do think the High Street could use some improvent. I do however love some of the shops, like the Iranian shop, Ghurkas, the chippy, but would like to see a few more nice shops, and yes, a couple of chains, especially a better supermarket.
People seem pleased with The Dolphin, but for me it's souless, and like having a pint in a Starbucks.
Just remember that it all started in ED when a certain Blue Mountain Cafe opened up... Be very careful what you wish for!!!

ADD - Cafe Nero,GBK,Wagamama,Waterstones,Organic Butchers,Fresh & Wild,Waitrose, great gastro/shabby chic pub.

Hate to break this to you reality Czech, but East Dulwich has fried chicken shops, bits & bobs shops, and several mini "super" markets. and there are still plenty of "chavs" drinking on the High Street.
They do have a Cafe Nero and a GBK (overpriced precooked shite), but ask for a Wagamama and Waterstones and you'll be chased out of town by an angry mob with pitchforks!
