Great concert at St Bart's this afternoon - the Mimosa Quartet (four young professionals) giving splendid performances of two wonderful and very accessible string quartets (both, I'm ashamed to say, previously unknown to me) - Haydn 'Sunrise', op. 76 no.4, and Dvorak's op 106.
Only £8 (£5 concessions). But (despite what's been said here recently about the popularity of classical music in Sydenham, the audience was disappointingly sparse. Could 'The Sydenham Recital Series' be better publicised? I heard about this one rather by accident, from the SydSoc emailed newsletter. I've tried in vain to find out online whether there are any more concerts to come. There is a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sydenham ... 8359009834, but it doesn't seem very informative.

Re: Today's Sydenham Recital Series concert
I read your report on a convoluted train journey (thanks to New Cross Gate railworks) back from a Corelli/Vivaldi/Bach/Handel concert to celebrate Mrs Admin's birthday at the QEH.
Oh - how much simpler, cheaper and probably even more enjoyable to have been with friends in St Barts's for this. But I didn't know about it.
I have met the delightful couple whose idea this is. I assured them that Sydenham has a substantial audience hungry for classical music. It was just a case of connecting with it. I steered them towards Sydenham Music as their mailing list would be a perfect promotion route. But nothing happened. I offered to do a website if that would help. But no response.
The 350 or so souls that turned out a couple of weeks ago for the Robert Trory concert are not the group I would mostly align with Facebook's demographic. So that's the issue in which they are, sadly, not alone in Sydenham doing good work but not combining with other people who could help them attain so much more but for the lack of a properly co-ordinated promotion programme.
If anyone reading this is in touch with them - please assure them that many of us would like to help - or just attend these recitals. PM me.

Re: Today's Sydenham Recital Series concert
The organisers are 'musician husband and wife team Pippa Harrison and James Willshire with the support of St Bartholomew's Church.' I have been in touch with them via their Facebook page and gather that yesterday was the last concert in the current series although they hope to start again in the autumn. If I can master the technology, I will try to draw their attention to this thread.
Re: Today's Sydenham Recital Series concert
Perhaps they could post in the STF diary? And Admin, could the diary please be viewable as a forum thread? i.e. as part of the board index.

Mary,
This is something I will think about and respond in Town Asylum in the near future. For information I had hoped Town Diary would be something which all with interests in and around Sydenham would jointly own, update and promote. That's why it was in the cloud (Google Calendar based).
But while all I spoke to about it nodded their heads - nothing happened. Which is a bit of a metaphor for what's wrong with Sydenham. But maybe I'm just having a bad Monday morning. That's why I going away to think about it all again. Do PM me if anyone is interested in all year round event promotion in SE26.

Re: Today's Sydenham Recital Series concert
Just to report that I did indeed draw Pippa's attention to this thread. She sent me a very nice reply, recognizing that they ought to try to do more on publicity (perhaps a website - she acknowledged Stuart's helpful advice) if the series is to continue in the autumn.
