Frewing

Post by Loriane »

Our ancestor John Frewing died at 1 Wells Cottage, Taylor Lane, Upper Sydenham and his daughter Hester Stripp was in attendance at the death. Can anyone tell me if there is a picture of that cottage anywhere? Also, I saw a picture of a milk cart with the letters TRIPP on it, could this have been STRIPP with the S obscured by the driver's hand? Hester's husband's name was Newton Stripp. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Loraine

I think it would have been Tripp, because that is a local name. There are lots of lovely posts at photographs on the Museum & Gallery part of this forum that I'm sure you would enjoy.

Like this one ...

and this one, with a lovely picture of Mr A.Tripp and his pony.

Thank you so much, that was all really interesting. It is funny that there was a Stripp family in the town as well as a Tripp family. Is there any chance the name changed at some point, that someone didn't like the S on the front and just dropped it? I know, I'm reaching with that one, but that sort of thing has happened from time to time. I will have to look at the old pictures the family brought with them from England and see if I can recognize any of these scenes. There are some church pictures that I would love to be able to identify. I am also still looking for 1 Wells Cottage, I haven't seen anything yet that has that exact address, that is the address on the death certificate for John Frewing but it might have been his daughter's house, in which case it was the Stripp home at that time (Newton being her husband's name). Thank you again. I'm excited to look through our old pictures as soon as I can.
