Bicycle shop on Anerley Hill

Post by stuart »

Out of area but may be known to Sydenham cyclists. Was there a cycle shop in the parade around the junction with Hamlet Road?

Hi Stuart, there was a shop around where you mention, I think it was Ken Bird Cycles.

Hi, for your further information, Ken Bird's shop was originally that of Reg Barnett, a well-known local cyclist who raced as a professional for some years. He too sold frames under his own name, but these would have been built by others. This shop flourished some time in the 1970's, Ken Bird taking over the business and renaming it. (He had another shop in Green Street Green Orpington.) The business was handy for the cycle racing facility at Crystal Palace. There was another shop nearby, but not in the same premises, owned by Stan Saunders. He had been a Tour of Britain competitor in the 1950's. This shop closed in the late 60's. Again frames were sold under the Saunders name, but it is not known who built them.
