Venetian blinds

Post by Suzee »

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy (probably made to measure) venetian blinds?
We need to replace ours for our bay window. Would be nice to be able to go local. Also am not keen on the websites where you put in your own measurements in case they don't fit!
Cheers,

Hi Suzee,
I got my blinds from Hillarys Blinds a couple of years ago. They do free home visits to measure and quote and also free fitting. I was more than happy with the results. You can contact them on

The local curtain shop has made and fitted all our curtains and blinds for years. Very professional and they take great pride in their work.

I was also looking for some venetian blinds locally but ended up ordering some online here - XXXXX. Initally i was sceptical as well about getting the measurements wrong, but i followed the measuring instructions and the blinds fitted great, and i save money too.

It would appear the person who posted the above has a commercial interest into the linked site and is not, as claimed a happy customer. Hence I have removed the link.

Just a thought. Venetian blinds are a wotsit to clean (though can get a special gadget brush thingy.)

Have you thought of Roman blinds or roller blinds or even vertical blinds depending on objective of needing blinds? You can get some that let light in but are not see-through from the outside (at a price). Given even Venetian blinds will cost a penny or too, it might be worth seeing what the cost difference would be. Also, as said, what you are trying to achieve, e.g. privacy or sun blockage on a bay window at certain times of day (not that that's likely to be a problem coming into winter). Horses for courses I reckon when spending lots of pennies.

I fancied some venetian blinds and didn't realise how difficult it would be to get some to fit my windows. They would have to be bespoke and cost a fortune. I got a quote of nearly £400 from the closing down curtain shop but that seemed ridiculously pricy to me. I wish Ikea ones would fit my windows! I would be very interested if you do have any luck.

Hi there, I am also looking for venetian blinds for my kitchen and bedroom and I am asking if you could recommend any blind companies, but preferably not online ones, as I want to see them live before I buy them. Also, after reading more about venetians on the internet, I found out they can make them with the finish you want. Here is where I read this: With a slight tilt of the operating wand or cord you can filer the suns glare to give complete comfort without sacrificing your view of the outdoors. Our made to measure venetian blinds are available in over 100 different colours and effects including mat, metallic, gloss and wood grain. Choose from our most popular 25mm slat range or alternatively the classic 50mm (2") slat range offering a more traditional look.
What sounds better to you? Metallic, gloss or mat? I myself would go for gloss, I have an overall modern decorated house and I think glossy blinds would go really nice. Any opinions are welcome!

Have you tried Designer Drapes in Penge High Street. They have done a good job with my blinds. They have a workroom above the shop where they make curtains. And they come and fit the blinds/ curtains.

We had Roman blinds made up by Designer Drapes on Penge High St using material from John Lewis. Not cheap but a good service. I have had made to measure Venetian blinds before made up to my measurements by http://www.cityblinds.co.uk/ on Hackney Road, decent enough, I think they get standard width and drop blinds and cut them down, I'm guessing that's what they all do.
