Slippery pavements

Post by LondonCalling »

i know its not just me .. but i have seen so many people slipping on these new paving stones when it rains.. or just when the pavement is wet. i bought a brand new pair of Desert boots .. you know the ones with a crepe sole.. well i cant wear them to walk down the high street because i slip every step i take,so i have to walk on the kerb instead of the pavement. i now do not wear them if i have to go down the high street. Does anyone else have this problem or do you all drive instead of walking down the road?

Yes London Calling, they are very slippery, even with non-crepe shoes.(I haven't worn crepe shoes since I was little and slipped over on a just washed floor in the crystal palace park loos, ending up at the hospital with a bleeding ear. My mum banned them after that!)

I don't know if the paving slabs will weather down, or maybe can be roughened up a bit. The steps near the post office are also pretty dangerous for the elderly or disabled.

They should weather in, but I haven't found then slippery (only when they had sand on them).

Over time they will get dirty and turn a dark grey (so they will look pretty much like it did before) so they shouldn't be as slippy, especially with the chewing gum.

"They should weather in"? Blimey.. it will take donkeys for them to weather in. the old slabs were concrete and had a rough finish but these new ones look like some kind of cheap marble.. i dont think they will ever weather in. What needs to be done before more people slip and fall over is for the council to get them all roughed up a bit with a sand blaster or something. Then again.. maybe if i fall and injure myself i can sue the council.

Yep, I'd noticed that too.

Oddly, I find I'm less likely to slip if I'm wearing footwear with no grips -flat soled, therefore with most pavement contact.

I'm not looking forward to Winter (again).
