THE OLD BLIND SHOP

Post by leenewham »

It's a shame that the old Nichols blind shop hasn't been developed (they are now in Kent and are called A25 awnings, they are fantastic).

It's also a shame that this large space isn't being used in some way. A great place for a car boot sale, market, fairground, outdoor pop up cafe, merry go round etc?

Any other ideas for temporary use (please lets try to keep this positive rather than reasons it can't be used!).

What space is that?

How about a pop-up bike shop? Perhaps LBL could be persuaded to arrange a Dr.Bike session and a cycling breakfast morning up there?

A large Morrisons 'M Local' would be nice.

It would have been a great place for a library.

It would be ideal as a Tesco Metro. I don't think there is one on that side of the high street.

Why do you think I'm being sarcastic?

It's a cleared site, flat, open. It's not that dissimilar to other sites that used to surround Bricklane. While planning disputes are being ironed out, why shouldn't it have a meanwhile use?

Oh because I like the idea of meanwhile use here- your suggestions too of a pop up cafe or market, but not though a fair ground, merry go round or car boot sale- an eyesore on a high street which is in the process of being smartened up?

Carter's steam fair is beautiful. It's god enough for dulwich. So are merry go rounds. There is an incredible French merry go round that's really unusual, like a Victorian menagerie. I saw it in Belgium a few years ago. It's art. Car boot sales on a Sunday morning? I don't have an issue with that. Mixing the use would be good, so that it caters for all.

What about a pop up outdoor cinema or theatre. Or event space. How about a drive in movie? Or a mix of food and the mobile movie van (I will try to find the link to this, it's amazing).

What about something for youths after school? I'm thinking that a basketball stand (usual sort which backboard and basket) and a "bring your own ball". Not sure if ground would need to be safety-fied, i.e. a flat rubberised surface which'd put the dampers on that idea. A post(s) on it's own though doesn't need to turn a profit ongoing and could be transportable rather than fixed permanently, nor needs anyone standing there trying to earn a wage, just the capital outlay and enough light - wallmounted floodlight? (Is it surrounded by fences to prevent lost balls?) Just an idea as the weather's getting too cold to be sitting or standing around for long.

Could ask Melissa at Sydenham and Forest Hill Youth Forum to see if outdoor theatre or improv sessions or rehearsals etc might "fly" assuming no hire/rent charge for usage.

Not sure about legal stuff like whether the owners would be liable for 3rd party liability? Have they agreed their space can be used?

Nope, this is just about ideas.

If someone wants to cultivate the ideas, jump on board. The seeds are all here.

Has anyone discussed this all with the site's owners?
