Posting mainly to express appreciation to the volunteers of Crystal Palace Subway for opening this amazing space as part of the London Open House weekend. Some photos of mine just coming, but more on their site and being tweeted here

My overall thought was what an amazing café / gallery space it could be, opening on the south side to a enclosed courtyard, contrasting to the opening to the north, a much more open terrace; maybe too open for people living in the houses it overlooks.

Thank you for posting the pics of this "Open House" weekend event, Tim.

As one of the "Friends" organising this weekend's event can I please ask those who do not have a time slot not to turn up on spec. The applications for the rare opportunity to visit this amazing forgotten piece of Victorian architecture were over-subscribed - we had over 1500 requests for the 280 places available on each day. The lucky 560 were successful in the ballot we held. It is a Hard Hat area and we are limited by agreement with Bromley, who have given us permission to hold this event, to 20 visitors per time slot.

We are working towards trying to open the Subway from the Southwark side, while Bromley Council are trying hard to find funding to make the parkside entrance a safe access point. We hope that we will be able to open the Subway for more regular visits starting sometime next year.

Extremely well done to the volunteers who organised this - including sorting latecoming gormless duffers like myself into organised parties.
Really glad I went and thoroughly recommend a cost next time it's open .

Further to my last post , by "cost" I intended "look". The curse of what I believe is called unpredictable text.
To the great credit of the Friends of Crystal Palace there was no cost , only a request for donations - which is far more agreeable .

At the moment Friends of Crystal Place Subway are trying to contact as many people as possible in South London with an interest in local issues and heritage. The reason for this is that we are running a community lead heritage project that will record the memories of people who have used the subway in the past. This may have been as an air raid shelter, a place to play or even for parties.
