Old topic ? book club in the area.

Post by Fuzzylilley »

Hello

Ive just moved to the Sydenham area and was looking to join a local book club, ive read a few of the posts on here but cant find anything recent. Im a young profesional (please tell me 27 is still young) with varied interests and would like to meet people in the area. If anyone knows of any book clubs or can point me in the right direction message me, i'd appreciate it.

Many thanks

Try the library! :D Nah, only joking, what actually is a book club? What type of books do you read? Not fictional I hope? The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins is a good one...

Well from my experience a book club picks a book each week or two weeks, mostly fiction but of varying topics. I find it nice to read the same book as another person and then discuss what you thought of it. I also like doing the same with films that i see, although it is easier to find people who have seen the same films rather than read the same books.

Hi and welcome. Have you tried ringing the Kirkdale Bookshop? http://www.sydenham.org.uk/kirkdale_bookshop.html.

If they don't know of a club, they might let you leave "calling cards" on the counter. They have a couple of small areas where you can sit and browse their books, so might even let you start a mini one (space permitting), since it might bring business to the shop.

Sydenham Library used to run a bookgroup, once a month on a Thursday. If you pop in they will tell you if it is still running.

I'll be interested to hear about any bookclubs in the area too, having just moved here myself. I'll also check out the Kirkdale Bookshop too. Cheers!

Hey thanks for all the great suggestions but they are things that i have tried. The kirkdale bookshop does indeed have a book club but they are full and have a very large waiting list. The library seem to also be in the same position. I think it may be the case that if there is enough demand i will see about setting one up myself. If anyone is interested then please send me a private message and i shall email you back.

Thanks

Actually, I was also recently looking to join a book club and found that Penge Library has space in their bookclub. It meets first Monday of Month.

If there was anything more locally being set up I would be interested in joining. Pls let me know via this site.

Why not check out Forest Hill Library, newly refurbished, and re-opening on 11 December?
