Rebuilding the Crystal Palace

A billionaire Chinese developer is drawing up a radical proposal to build an exact replica of the Victorian Crystal Palace that housed the Great Exhibition of 1851.

ZhongRong Holdings — owned by one of China’s richest men — hopes to build a copy of the 900,000 sq ft cast-iron and plate-glass building in London’s Crystal Palace park.

According to Property Week, ZhongRong is in early discussions to develop the scheme. It wants the new Crystal Palace to host exhibitions and events and aims to submit a planning application later this year.

Personally I'm in favour of a major tourist attraction being set up in the area. I think it will be a massive creator of jobs for local people and reinstates a major piece of Victorian heritage.
My only real concern would be the impact on traffic but this could be off-set but the developer investing in rail and tram infrastructure for Crystal Palace and Penge West, and it would be the perfect destination for the Bakerloo line extension.

We are in total agreement, there has to be a first time.

I have not seen this and remain somewhat doubtful if it will happen , but hope it does.

Perhaps we could re open the High Level Station . Oh I forgot they have built dwellings on the station site.

Every few years somebody comes up with a grand scheme to rebuild the palace, but it usually comes to nothing. It would be nice if this time it were different.

Well I don't think a train line that goes through woodland, nature reserves, and bat caves is likely to get permission, but digging underground along the old route and calling it the Bakerloo Line is the solution to building a fourth railway from Central London to Crystal Palace.

Michael you are probably right, although for some reason they do not see to like underground lines that are actually underground in our area.

When they closed so many railway lines in the 60's and before , they usually stipulated that the right of way should ne maintained. A very wise policy. Perhaps could put back the bridge over London Road at Horniman's.

It certainly would be great if the Palace were rebuilt.

What a magnificent sight it would be. A nightmare to keep clean....and heat.... but that is mere detail. I think it would be a wonderful (re) addition to the London landscape.....
