i am descending into middle-age in a hive of inactivity. I used to be a fairly competent runner over a decade ago and could manage a respectable time of 1hr 30mins for a half marathon.
I am lazy at heart, but would like to take up running again. One of two things would be needed to motivate me to do this.
1) Are there any 10k runs being held in theSydenham area in November? If i have a target to aim for, i will HAVE to keep to a training schedule.
or
2) are there any friendly running clubs around Sydenham where i can waddle along in a 'pack'.
I am fairly unfit and overweight at the moment, but there is a lot of potential. I am 38yrs old, so there's a bit of fuel left in the tank.
I don't expect to run a half marathon in 1hr 30mins ever again, just looking to get really healthy again.
Any suggestions i would be very grateful for.

Running.
Hi mate,
I'm not fit enough to run... How about joining me on a walkabout from Sydenham to Rochester then getting the train back? We would have to leave at 9am and arrive back at 10pm; the walk would probably take 12 hours. I have the route already planned; it could burn off untold calories (I need to after trying out all those curries!). Alternatively, I have another walkabout planned along the Saxon Shoreway on the Hoo Peninsula, starting at Cliffe Fort (nearest train station is Higham). Or what about just beating the bounds of Sydenham/Lewisham? Just a thought...

Haha, you serious? I thought I was the only person in the world craziest enough to do these kinds of distant walks! Have you got strong calf muscles? I know I can't handle running, but do you think you can handle this kind of walking? Anyway, thanks for your PM; I hope we can arrange something soon! Should be fun... even if it's just a riverside walk along the Pool valley where one can often hear the African community of Perry Hill singing out loud. I always bring my camera with me and go looking for old buildings and nice views. Who knows what we'll come across on our travels across the country... last time I witnessed first hand a crash at Mottingham. The time before that I witnessed some illegal immigrants working in a field for 3 English guys. Oh man, we really have to get out there in the fresh air; there's so much to see in Kent... All my friends are only interested in cars and public transport--not motivated enough to keep fit. Remember: study of past and travel are similar--they widen the view and deepen the experience of life.
i keep going and keep going. I never surrender.
Legs are fine (thanks for asking! )
I am now worried about your suggestion of bringing a camera. This isn't some sort of weird initiation ceremony, or dogging activity?
Seriously, when I embark on something, you'll have to kill me to stop. It's just the initial motivation I lack. If you are up for it, then I will be a keen participant.

ALIB,
There is a 10k road race in Dulwich in October, other than that aren't really any in the immediate area.
As for running clubs. Dulwich Park Runners, located on Dulwich Common are a very friendly bunch. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday evenings and have a wide range of speeds, so there will be load of people to run with there.
