Latest from Jill, 27 Sydenham Road
Jill, our community hub at 27 Sydenham Road, is planning new projects as well as holding workshops and events.
Artistic Coordinator Corrine http://corinnefurness.com/ is currently running a project looking at the heritage of our high street and next Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February there will be the theme of “Exploring the high street”.
From February to July we are hosting Co.Futures http://www.burtonnitta.co.uk/Co-Futures/index.html, a project led by SEE3 artists in-residence Burton Nitta http://www.burtonnitta.co.uk/. They will re-examine our encounter with the high street and research what is the future of citizenship. The project will be a chance to re-imagine how we live together and to create experiences to taste the future. You are invited to join our journey to imagine how our interactions with food, financial systems, energy production and well-being might be transformed in the future.
Visit Jill next week to take part in the Co.Futures project to experience how insects might become a part of our future diets. Starting on Tuesday 19th when times will vary then Wednesday 20th, Friday 22nd and Sunday 24th February when session will run between 10am to 5,30pm. Join us to experience how a shop can be a farm, factory and food store all at the same time. Drop-into the hub to see more and you can even make a product with our metamorphosis factory.
Jill will continue selling products from local designers and crafts people
To join in, sign up for a workshop or have a cup of tea, pop into Jill 10:00am – 6:00pm Wednesday to Saturday or 11:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday.

The Happiness Project starts this weekend - workshops on Saturday and Sunday 16/17 March - how we might make people on our high street smile more. Why not call into Jill and give your views.

No 'same as everywhere else' shops: i.e. No Tesco.
More independent shops.
Better service from people who you get to know and own the business.
Happier shop owners.
Making shops look like they are proud of themselves.
Better variety of shops to cater for ALL pockets.
More community on the high street, the arts festival being able to use empty shops for amazing things.
Less red tape for small businesses and more pop up shops (great work by The Shop Revolution so far).
More places to eat out and a better night time economy.
Building Sydenham as a brand (By that I don't mean a logo, a brand isn't a logo) so that people know what it is, what it offers and where it is. But it has to offer something unique, which is does'nt currently do.
The traders having a stronger voice and a proper traders association with more traders involved.
This is all the stuff that is happening elsewhere (aside form the Tesco bit!) and just needs momentum and backing and some dosh.

Please go and join in the performance theatre and workshops - last minute touches complete for the performance about to start now and then at 2pm and 4pm. This is your high street so take the time to visit and engage with different views.

I popped in this morning.
It's all good stuff but events like this should be advertised better in the windows of the hub. I didn't notice anything in the windows about it.
Corrine is doing a grand job but the great efforts going on inside should be shouting out of the window.
Anyone else think the same?

Lee perhaps you could help spread the word on your various web sites about the workshops and performances.
The "what makes you happy?" performance this afternoon was very good and will be repeated tomorrow at the same times - 12.30, 2pm and 4pm.
There is the Cold Writing festival starting on Monday 18th March with 48 hours to write a 10 minute play - with time on Thursday 21 March to rehearse the plays and then a performance! This continues next Saturday 23rd March.
The Easter bonnet workshops start on Wednesday 20th March.
Please take a look at the A board outside Jill for the latest events.

I'd be happy to Chris, just send me the info if you want me to and I'll put it on What If Sydenham and tweet about it. Hopefully other people will too. Content for the other blogs is decided by Friends of Home Park and The Library, I'm just the gatekeeper and designer.
I would recommend using the window display more. People notice things that change, I have it admit I didn't even notice an A board (and people don't tend to read stuff on the high street).
Window displays are important and if Jill can set a standard, perhaps other shops in Sydenham will follow suite. If it keeps changing and doing something genuinely different, it can only be a good thing surely?

Cold Writing @ Jill - at the moment there is a writing festival taking place at Jill with rehearsals talking place tomorrow, Thursday 21 March, ready for the first performance of a new play at 7.30pm in the evening. The performance will be repeated on Saturday at 12.30pm and 3pm. All the perfromances are free - and the standard last weekend was top notch.
So get on down to Jill to find out about the writers - and find out more on the website - http://www.writebynumbers.co.uk

Re: Latest from Jill, 27 Sydenham Road
We are refreshing Jill and this is a call for more arts and crafts people to join us to showcase their products for the last six weeks of using this community shop.
We will be looking for a small % of sales but really it is the volunteering time in the shop we want to keep the space open to bring in footfall.
Anyone interested in running a workshop? At the moment we have a knitter who is offering to share the art - but we really need to make more use of the space.
It was full last Thursday for the On The Hoof reception and talk by Steve Grindlay - http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9229 and the short plays have been well received. I particularly liked the Easter bonnet workshops - we have some photos on the SEE3 web site - http://www.see3.co.uk/2013/04/photo-gal ... nets-2013/
Please let us know if you can help in your community space - for the last six weeks we want to go all out to bring in more footfall.
At the moment we are showing a short documentary by Louise Green, a student from UCA Epsom.
The media informs us regularly that the death of the high street is imminent, our communities are fragmented, and that recovery will be long and uncertain. Perhaps we should question this and ask ourselves what is truly happening and what we have to do ourselves to enrich the high street that is entwined within our community. The local shopkeepers and residents of Sydenham discuss these questions in search for the truth, each with diverse opinions. Why and how is the landscape of the high street changing? What do people believe is currently occurring? What does the future hold?

Re: Latest from Jill, 27 Sydenham Road
Good news that Desnee from Bluebell Woods has taken the window plinth with her wonderful vintage and upcycled furniture. Tanya and Coral are in Jill tomorrow, Sunday from 11am to 4pm - so call in and find out more about their scarves and pictures. We have a fantastic offer from local artists - space is running out so if you want to sell get in quick for our final few weeks whilst the legal agreements are being finalised for a new long term tenant.

We still have some space for the last few weeks for local artists - the deal is that you have to be part of a volunteers rota to open or close Jill. We also need more volunteers to help run the space with the artists. Please PM me or email info@see3.co uk

Sunny day and Jill is open from 11am to 4pm today for trading some unique products from local artists - over 20 local artists selling goods including knitwear, jewellery and some downright quirky items.
