Just a reminder to everyone who wants to improve the look and feel of Sydenham high street that we are holding our community clean up day tomorrow.
We are meeting at 10am outside the Co-op on the corner of Girton Road from where we will work our way up the high street to Cobbs Corner removing flyposting, shutter stickers and graffiti.
Lewisham will be bringing along glovers and hi viz jackets and other necessary equipment to complete out task. Please note no experience is necessary as full training and supervision will be given. We will be using environmentally friendly chemicals to remove the flyposting so please wear old clothing and suitable footwear.
This is your chance to join us to make a difference.

Great initiative Chris. Good luck.

Chris - Good initiative. A pity that it's being held at a time when a lot of people will have work and other commitments. Do you have any plans to do something similar on evenings or weekends?

Many thanks to everyone who attended the community clean up day and received Lewisham time credits http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/getinvolved/ ... works.aspx. There were over 20 people working on the high street including the Lewisham Environmental Projects team who provided the hi viz jackets, gloves and materials. It was held during the working day so that Lewisham officers could take responsibility for the activities.
It might be we can have a "leader" if the next session is on a Saturday morning and Lewisham are able to drop of the gear in advance.
Some people said the shop shutter stickers would be back in 24 hours and they were right - this morning I removed 70 shutter stickers with the name "Perfect Shopfitters Limited". The good news is that they were easy to peel off and I will be following up with Lewisham enforcement officers to take legal action as fly-posting is illegal.
Anyone caught fly-posting can be fined or prosecuted. Under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 the maximum fines for fly-posting have increased from £1000 to £2500. Authorised council officers can also issue a fixed penalty notice of approximately £75.
It is possible to prosecute those companies that are beneficiaries of fly-posting. Companies are no longer able to use the legal defence of ignorance or lack of consent if a company is fly-posting their product or service. So a warning to the companies on the shutter stickers that if we can make contact we will be looking at legal action.
I have also asked traders to remove stickers on their shop shutters - whilst we had a good go on Thursday there are still more to remove and with help from the traders we can improve the look of our high street.

Well done to all those who took part. If you can get this to take place on a Saturday next time, we would be happy to take part.
