So, for the first time since I learned to drive, my car has a realistic chance of making it of my block's car park in the event of moderate snow fall.

Austerity tip: Tesco Metro in Kirkdale seems to be selling cheaper rock salt than B&Q Croydon, albeit in smaller bags. And snow shovels seem to be around 1/3 cheaper at Sydenham DIY than Homebase Penge. Go figure!

Looking at the forecast, it looks like the snow will be gone pretty quickly. However, if the weather changes and the snow freezes... well, we all remember what happens then, don't we? So if it looks like the forecast for rain is wrong, do get out and shovel the paths outside your property if you can. After you've cleared the path (this is the important bit), sprinkle on some salt or grit (you can pinch some grit from the piles left by the council at strategic points). This stops the ground refreezing. It's a quick job and just the thing for working off a few of those extra Christmas inches.

Just got back from Northampton work commitment hense my jovial mood, it's the aids capital of the UK apparently?

It snowed on my way up there, quite a harrowing experience driving on the M1 during a blizzard, what with lunatic BMW and psycho lorry drivers. I really don't like driving in the snow, it really is a case of our lives in their hands. The snow was still there when I left and the temp was between -9 and -5 we don't get snow like they do, it really is grim up north.

1: Shovel as much snow (if any) off of surface as possible.
2: Bag or 2 of rock-salt - spinkled over icy surface (leave for 5 mins).
3: Sweep rock-salt into ice untill the salt content causes thawing.

(Don't forget to monitor / check conditions reguarly)..Top up rock-salt.

I think it's more that so many lazy people can't be bothered quite frankly Rachael!

A lot of H&S myths have emerged over the years. Of course anyone can have a go if
they really want to or need to. Leaving a large 6ft pile of ice (Iceberg) in the middle
of a busy road would be negligent and somewhat a no-no! Apart from the extreme
situations there is little that H&S would throw you in prison for..

It's not that bad yet although I've used 8 large bags of rock-salt on our Schools paths
already. Hope it doesn't get too bad as too much shovelling tends to make my back ache!

It started snowing at 9:00 this morning here in ED and has been going for 5 hours and doesn't look like stopping anytime soon. It will stop but start snowing again and It'll freeze tonight probably so tomorrow will be fun.

My driveway now gleams with wet, black tarmac.

A pity it leads out onto a road that is fast becoming an ice-rink.

Ah well, at least anyone that's currently out has a chance of making it back into the communal car park. I'm not sure how many cars parked on the road will escape a pranging by out-of-control drivers.

It's a blizzard out, took my lad to Peckham Rye Park, well, dragged him on his sled, he did make me laugh as he kept saying mush! mush!

He said today was the best day ever so I'm beaming at the moment but really quite worn out.

Wonder how bad the commute will be in the morning?

Thank you to whoever worked hard to clear a long path along a good portion of Venner Road, that made today's outing much easier!! It inspired me to do a (small) bit of my road, though not much - my kids don't nap for long enough. Still, just wanted to acknowledge that whoever did Venner Road today has really made a lot of people's lives that bit easier for the next few days - thanks!!

it's taken me two days of effort to get my dishwasher converted into a
snow plough. End result is the wife has just got the shovel out of the
shed and finally getting on with it.

Too cold to take my bra off, although the burning would warm me up again.

There is a huge heap of grit at the SE23 end of Mayow Road, right beside a long stretch of icy pavement. Has been there since yesterday and no one has touched it. I assume we are allowed to go grab a bagful and get spreading? It's the equivalent of the old grit bins, yes?

In fact, the street cleaners were using the grit this morning and have done the pavements. But if you used it to do the pavements outside your own home, I'm sure that's fine, as it is what it is there for.
