Lewisham commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day 2013

Post by admin »

Lewisham is marking Holocaust Memorial Day with two events:

· a multi-faith service at Catford Synagogue
· young people’s production at the Broadway Theatre

This year’s theme ‘Communities together: build a bridge’, encourages everyone to guard against hatred and come together in a collective sense of pride and unity within our communities.

Lewisham’s annual event is an opportunity for everyone to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent atrocities and genocides that have taken place in the world. The event brings together contributions from the Jewish, Christian, Islamic and Sikh faiths.

Readers at the service will include:
Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham
Jamel Higgins, Young Mayor of Lewisham
Rev David Rome, Minister of Catford & Bromley Synagogue
Dinah Griffiths, Chair of SACRE
Gurbaksh Singh Garcha, VICE Chair of SACRE and former Mayor of Lewisham
Rev Charles Pickstone, St Laurence Church, Catford
Councillor Eddy Arram, Mayor of Croydon
Mrs Rachel Levy, Holocaust survivor.

The service will also include a presentation by students from Bonus Pastor Catholic College.

Booking is essential for this free event at Catford Synagogue at 12noon on Saturday 26 January. Tickets can be obtained by calling 020 8314 8636.

The young people's production will take place at 4pm on Sunday 27 January at the Broadway Theatre, Catford. The production will involve music, dance and drama from children from Childeric, St William of York, Holy Trinity, Fairlawn, St John the Baptist and Brindishe Green primary schools. Tickets are priced at 50p and are available from the Broadway Theatre box office on 020 8690 0002 with all proceeds going to the Aegis Trust.

Councillor Pauline Morrison, Chair of the Holocaust Memorial Committee said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together, irrespective of belief or background, and unite in an effort to create a better and safer future”.
