Perry Rise/Perry Hill Buses

Post by InTheForest »

I've already asked this over on the se23.com forum and they suggested that I might also get useful answers here.
TIA

We are currently looking at buying somewhere around the SE23 and nearby area and one place that we keep seeing properties is around the bottom of Perry Rise/Perry Hill, near the giant Sainsbury's. But I need to commute into London every day and am worried about the reliability of buses up to the station - either Catford or Forest Hill. I'd be travelling in rush hour and the buses up to FH look pretty infrequent. The buses up to Catford look more regular but one failed to turn up in the middle of the day by Bell Green the other day so I'm dubious.
What have other people's experiences been?
Any other thoughts about living down there? It's cheaper, but is that because the public transport doesn't work or is it for other reasons?

You may be better getting the train from Lower Sydenham to LB /CC and CS.

Hi there

From there, you are most definitely better getting the train from Lower Sydenham - it's about a 10-15 minute walk, you don't have to rely on buses and it goes direct to Charing Cross in 23 minutes (doesn't stop at London Bridge, although it does stop at Waterloo East) or to Cannon Street which doesn stop at London Bridge in around 25 minutes.

Only downside is that it is Zone 4, which is more expensive than the other 2 stations, but may be more reliable than buses to the Zone 3 stations?

I use the Charing Cross one every day from further away than you, and find it very civilised!

Hope that helps

We moved to Perry Rise, down by sainsburys in the summer and we have been pleasantly surprised about how good the transport options are.

Where in central London do you need to get to? You can get to Victoria from Penge East, which is a short journey on the 194 bus from bell green. Or you can get the 450 or the 202 to Sydenham station, or the 356 to forest hill. We've not used lower Sydenham as its not useful for us.

I have got a bus app for my phone so I track when the buses are due to arrive and this makes things easier!

I'm going in to Charing Cross most days, so quite keen on the LS/Catford Bridge train so that I don't have to do the London Bridge change which Sydenham or Forest Hill force.
I might well end up going to LS instead, but it would be extra to pay on the Travelcard so was wondering how much Catford Bridge might be an alternative, depending on exactly how far north we end up.
I actually went down that way this morning and it took me 20 mins to walk from the corner of Perry Rise/Hill to Catford Bridge and the buses weren't frequent. So based on that I think I'd have to do the walk as at least then you can rely on timings.

The change at London Bridge for Charing Cross trains will soon be suspended for a long time (months, years, can't remember, but a LONG time) while they continue rebuilding London Bridge.
