Hall Drive is a private road so all that means is the council do not maintain it and the residents have to pay for its upkeep. The road is owned by a management company/residents association (not quite sure which). Residents have to pay an annual fee to this company which goes into a road fund to pay for fixing pothole/resurfacing etc. The residents still have to pay full council tax part of which maintains other peoples streets etc. From my understanding - parking is not allowed on Hall Drive even for residents for various reasons. A number of years ago there were problems with some non residents parking in the road, often blocking other people's driveways and then leaving their car there the whole day whilst they went to work on the train. There were also some selfish residents who parked large commercial vehicles on the road. Double parking meant on more than one occasion the dustcart and other large vehicles couldn't access the road and there was one occasion when an emergency vehicle was stuck. Also one, of the nice things about the road is its green and open aspect and the fact that children can play, ride bicycles etc around, parked vehicles on either side made this much less safe. Lots of people choose to walk down this road rather than parallel streets is because of these factors. As a private road no one has a right to park there any more than you have a right to park in someone else's front garden. Residents own their houses but do not own the actual road. The residents committee therefore aimed to enforce no prolonged and inconvenient parking as far as is possible. Of course people have visitors and guests and no one minds occasional cars there , but it is the prolonged, inconvenient, and sometimes dangerous parking that is objected to. One sided parking would be more likely to lead to disputes and problems therefore a blanket ban seems overall fairer. I am sure there are inconsiderate and rude people who live in this road as much as anywhere else, but on the whole it is pleasant and quiet and most people seem to get on with their neighbours.

My road is a green and pleasant road, full of nice houses , nice trees, and a pleasure to walk down, however my Children couldn't play in the street either mainly because of other people's cars! Be it selfish parking or whatever, Is this not the norm in London? Why should Hall Drive be any different?

I think because someone has parked outside of your house is just one of those things and might mean you'll have to take a few more walking steps to your front door.
That's not the issue here Mike,
The issue is selfish parking, not allowing/thinking about other people.
Everyone has to park somewhere, but ,think of others before taking up two spaces.

..because it is a private road paid for by the residents and not the council and the owners are in charge of parking there - same as you can decide whether you want to let your children play in your garden or if you want to fill it up with old fridges. Sorry I didn't know we lived in a Stalinist regime where everyone has to be identical. No doubt you could get together with your neighbours and get parking restrictions in your road if you really wanted to - ask the council for a CPZ. I can't afford to live in a house in Regents Park/ Dulwich/Blackheath/Sydenham Avenue /Lawrie Park etc but it doesn't mean I think they should all be concreted over and turned into soulless apartment blocks just because this is the "norm in London".

I've got my own parking space, residents parking permit in a soulless new build apartment block populated by doleites and scroungers.

Not much longer though as I've just secured a real house built out of bricks which is an improvement over the vinegar and brown paper this place is built out of.

Happy days.

How can doleites and scroungers afford to pay the rent.

That is a big mystery to me.

Good Luck in your new green idyl .

Is it Pratt's Bottom per chance.

You are not leaving the area I hope Annie?

Pity Mike departing but seems to have neighbour problems. He is not going to The Black Country or Pratt's Bottom. But where?

We are thinking about it Eagle, we have looked at a few places, but so far not seen what we want.
May look again in the spring time.
Shame Eagle, but I think it's time to leave London to the youngsters.
