No estate agents boards in Syd

Post by Heritage Angle »

Fine piece of self-PR from the estate agents at the top of the hill: "We're taking all our boards down on the main road as they look unsightly...". Cant believe that made from page news. Guess some journalist had a favour done, maybe a good discount.... Talk about shouting from the peak!

They should shout as loud as possible, they are to be congratulated and I hope other follow their lead. In case anyone doesn't know what this is about, it originates here:

I didn't know it was in the press (do you have a link?), although I'm glad they have been. We have been talking directly to Estate agents in some of the areas we have been working in around London on the Outer London Fund about removing the signs with little success aside from getting a few old ones taken down, which is why I tried using this forum (which I got a bit of stick for). Hats off to property world, they have a great deal to do with the local community in Sydenham, investing in the Arts Festival, Arts in the Park and many other things.

This is what Property world have to say: http://www.propertyworlduk.net/news_dir ... +Street_25

That link on the PW website looks like a straight lift from how it was covered in the South London Press, whose fearless new investigative reporter, noticing that it was something to do with Sydenham, naturally called up the Sydenham Society to get a quote. It is also here on the SydSoc web site, without any hint of the human interest story of how three SydSoc members (Lee, Mary and myself), by suggesting via this Forum that we might take some direct action, seem to have made the difference.

I think Property World are fully entitled to shout about it - it is a very positive gesture . Without doubt they are risking to some extent, their visibility and profile by giving up the boards . Getting some press coverage is a far better approach and I don't think anyone has reason to cavil, cock snooks or thumb noses.
If we are going to encourage traders to help smarten up Sydenham we have to applaud them and more importantly, spend our money with them . By the same token we should avoid those traders that merely take money and give nothing back .
Good afternoon

After some time talking to the residential estate agents on the high street we are now reaching agreement on not to add any more signage - Acorn have been removing their boards and will remove the last once the deal is complete.

The commercial estate agents are a tougher nut to crack although I have had some positive response to suggestions of putting an advert in the shop window rather than than a huge board that remains on the building for many months whilst the deal is completed. I know many of the vacant shops are under offer but still we have signs showing vacant.

I have also been talking to the estate agents about getting the wooden battens removed - it may be we have to develop this into a project as part of SEE3 under the high street improvement budget.

I understood the Portas money was only to be used on shops not on improving the street? If I was wrongly informed them I'd like to see the money spent on repairing pavements that have been damaged by cars and installing bollards to stop further damage. The area outside the woodman and that part of kirkdale is in a very dangerous and unsightly way due to vans parking on the pavement.

I think the estate agents should ensure the battens are removed and repairs made at their own expense.

You couldn't be more wrong - Lee is the one who posted on this forum, asking Property World to take a lead on this and remove their boards. He attracted criticism from some on here who thought he was 'naming and shaming' and thus undermining a local business. But PW responded positively to the challenge. This is an entirely positive local story, whatever you think of estate agents in general, so quit your carping!

I noticed HA posted at 2.13 am - I always reckon, if I'm awake at that time, that I'm probably too tired to post here :D

Rod
Things have come to a repulsive pass when
estate agents , with their obsession with subsidence if their is so much as a small dogwood within a mile of a property, are now nailing their grotesque signs to that most beautiful thing we have .
I will write to them in no uncertain terms and post what I hope will be a rapid and appeasing response .
Make no mistake , this is disorder and anti-social behaviour , no less so than the vibrant self expression visited upon us by those hooded Hockneys of the spray can.
Good evening
Nigel
