Hi everyone,
We are thinking of moving to East Penge (a few minutes from east penge station), can you advise me on the area, whether its safe, whether its too far from sydenham overground (or other useful stations), are there useful shops nearby or is sydenham Rd high st the nearest shopping area? Are there any good (nursery) schools nearby, etc.
Just trying to get an idea of the area really.
Any advice on area would be useful.
Thanks.
Moving to East Penge
Re: Moving to East Penge
There are many lovely roads near Penge East and some not quite so great.
Shopping would be Penge High Street I would think.
Re walk to Sydenham station for overground , not sure how far you are away. Guess you walk or Bus up Lawrie Park Road or Newlands Park. Both have had problems but would consider them generally safe.

There is a topic on Virtual Norwood which follows the deliberations of Lucy, following her thoughts of moving to Penge, and finally moving to the area and loving the place. Have a look if you have a moment There are some potentially useful opinions about the area, particularly on Page 3 I think:

Re: Moving to East Penge
Which side of the railway are you looking at, i.e. the Penge side or Sydenham side? You mention access to Syd. Station. There's a free all day council car park at Girton Road, from which it's a 5-10 mins walk to Syd. Station. Alternatively, if on foot, from Penge East Station to Syd. Station, it's about 15-20 mins walk, or can catch a 194 or 75 bus along Newlands Park. The buses are about 10-12 mins apart and tend to get full at peak and school rush hour times, then c.5 mins walk to Syd. Station entrance. Incidentally, If on foot, it's quicker to get across the railway via the Penge East railway bridge when the station is open if walking on the roads might be circuitous by comparison.
The Virtual Norwood thread covers things pretty well.
On its name, I recall that Penge was pronounced "Ponge" to make it sound more upmarket, I think originally stemming from The Goon Show donkey's years ago, probably long forgotten now though.
