Hi,
Could anyone tell me where are good local places to advertise a room for rent? Or, is there a part of this website where I can advertise?
Thanks
Lucy
Advertising - should we allow it?

Good question Lucy. And welcome to Sydenham Town.
Originally there was a free classified section here which was discontinued due to lack of use. Then we introduced GoogleAds which gave local businesses an opportunity to promote themselves without clogging up the forum and helping to support the website at the same time.
I would be interested in people's views on whether we should maybe re-introduce a 'classified' section. I would counsel that if we did it would be restricted to sellers/buyers located in SE26. Also, perhaps only individuals - not businesses. What do you think?
Stick around Lucy. If the reaction is favourable you could be the first ...
Oh and a name. Town Market, Town Bazzar ....

I think having classified ads might be quite useful. I've been looking on ebay to buy some fairly bulky items (e.g. a mirror and a bookshelf) and would much prefer to buy locally, so that delivery/collection is quicker and cheaper.
Lucy: existing sites that I used to advertise (when I rented a shared flat and a flatmate moved out) have been moveflat.com (which breaks down into particular areas of London) and gumtree.com (which breaks down by North/ South of the river and then by single/double room).

YES. definately for individuals and small businesses - like handymen, window cleaners, chiropractors - all those local trades asked about in the Town Forum that you want a recommendation for. I personally am interested in buying a 3 bed flat /house and the Forum is ideal for this kind of advert...any offers??!

I have used/am using Gumtree and Moveflat, etc, but my aim in trying to post on a local site was to find local people who wanted to move locally. My experience of advertising a room in a flatshare in the above websites is that often people don't want to move to Sydenham/Forest Hill, no matter how well I try and sell it to them! Most people that have responded to my advert have been local anyway, so I thought it would be great to advertise on a local site where people already know and hopefully like the area.
OK - it looks like we ought to have a classified section. It will appear this week. All that is left is to draw up the guidelines. Here's my suggestions:
1) The seller/poster must be identifiable as local. This means with an SE26 or neighbouring postcode or local telephone number, or a long track record of posting to this Forum.
2) The posting will expire after 28 days. It is up to the poster to renew (so we don't get a load of dead offers)
3) Should we exclude sex, drugs but not rock'n'roll? Or would that be too restricting for future capatains of industry?
Any comments, any more?

This sounds good to me Admin. Two quick comments:
1. You might want to make a distinction between local tradesmen etc using this to advertise their services on a permanent basis (their ads wouldn't lapse after 28 days) and someone wishing to buy/ sell an item on a one-off basis (where lapsing after 28 days would be appropriate).
2. You might want to consider breaking down further so that for example people looking for a room to rent can scan through the accommodation ads and do not have to see ads from people selling bookcases etc on the same page. But I suppose the need for this would increase if there were many ads appearing, so you could do this at a later stage if this feature becomes really popular.

SYDENHAM CLASSIFIEDS IS NOW LIVE. START POSTING!!!
Thomas - thanks for your suggestions. I will indeed split the categories finer if or when we get enough to populate a new section (half a dozen?). Re tradesmen - they can repost to keep their offers going. The software either auto-prunes the lot or not. If any tradesmen want a bigger/longer lasting ad they are very welcome to pay for a special
The T&Cs are a first shot to try and keep it nice and simple. I'm trusting that like in the rest of the Forum people will post responsibly and I hate lists of petty restrictions. We will see how it goes and how we all feel about it. We can always change the T&Cs as we go along ...
ENJOY!
