Canal House, Stanstead Road?

Post by Falkor »

A lady told me about a house at the top of end of Stanstead Road, which had something to do with the old croydon canal. She said it had a plaque or something. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it; anyone know which building she was referring to?

BTW, I was analysing the 1843 Tithe map, and it seems the earliest buildings around this part of Stanstead Road were grouped around the site of the present Inn/Hotel. The oldest building in the main part of the road might be Stanstead Lodge I reckon...

This is a story attached to 63 Stanstead Road now, I believe, an Indian takeaway. It is beyond the Forest Hill Hotel, near the bend. There is an interesting stone with a relief carving that appears to show a boat of some sort. Unfortunately it is now covered by the fascia board.

I don't believe that this cottage has anything to do with the canal. At this point the canal followed Davids Road, on the other side of the railway line. Anyway, the cottage doesn't appear on the 1843 tithe map, seven years after the canal closed and four years after the railway opened.

This is the best I can do by way of a picture:

Now I remember; that is indeed what the lady was referring to. Yeah, the canal was on the other side of the railway, and if the building is not on the map then it can't have a direct connection with the canal. Spot on, Steve! Cheers for clarifying that... and the pic, too.
