Post by suzie »

Hi all

i have lived on venner rd for nearly 2 years in one of the 1970's town houses. The row of houses we live in sit right in front if canal walk.

Does anyone know what was on the land before these houses were built?

I have been through the internet but can't find a thing

Yes can help. Lived as a child in Venner Road from 49 to 74.

The new houses in Canal Walk were a row of 4 story Victorian houses. Not as nice as the ones over the road but same sort of style.

Originally LBC , in their wisdom , were going to pull down both sides of the road but the terrace opposite you was saved by top theatricals , including Lord Olivier. This was because of the theatrical collection of Joe and Raymond in about 5th or so house down. Now in Bristol Theatrical Museum.
They had a Bust of the bard in the first floor window with a reef on each year on his birthday.

Hope this helps
