Sydenham's Pacifist War Hero
Sydenham's Pacifist War Hero
This is George Phillips, who died last year, being awarded a medal by Queen Beatrix of Holland - I believe - and a very young looking Prince Charles. It was shown me today by his proud widow. George's Christianity meant that he preferred to save lives than to take them, so joined the RAMC. His heroism came out at Arnhem where he cared for the injured, and ended up in a POW camp, returning to Sydenham after the war half-starved. He lived here all the rest of his life, leading the Boys' Brigade at Wesley Hall church. How much we owe people like him.
