A recent study has shown that just one Daily Mail a day can significantly raise your blood pressure, cause eyes to bulge and end with an unfortunate posting on this forum. No cancer link has yet been established but we are working on it.

Boring Daily Mail bashing aside it seems fair enough that the pots were removed if they partially blocked a fire escape route.

Bit of a humour loss this morning V? Did you note the probable source of the story?Voyageur wrote:Boring Daily Mail bashing aside ...

Nope. However as I work in the cursed
field of H & S you will understand that I get a bit tired of the constant bashing out gets. Plus I don't have a sense of humour until 11 am being a night owl - I well be cackling with glee in 45 mins.

If it was a fire hazard then they should be removed.
Simples tsk.

What is the views field of H & S?Voyageur wrote:Nope. However as I work in the views field of H & S you will understand that I get a bit tired of the constant bashing out gets. Plus I don't have a sense of humour until 11 am being a night owl - I well be cackling with glee in 45 mins.

I'm a night owl but today I had to get up at 4:30 as I had to be in Basingstoke for 07:00.
There wasn't much traffic around at 05:15 when I left which in contrast is a very different experience from when I usually drive to that location through the centre of town.
Having said this I did feel as though I'd been dug up, four cigarettes and three cups of coffee later I'm now ready to take off.

Whoops, blinking predictive text! I meant cursed field not views field.mikecg wrote:What is the views field of H & S?Voyageur wrote:Nope. The comment on the story was from Lawrence Webb: UKIP's London Mayoral Candidate.stuart wrote: Did you note the probable source of the story?Voyageur wrote:Nope
Not the first (or second ...) person I would think of calling to comment on this. Hence I speculate.

Re: Elf and safety gone mad in Sydenham
I feel a bit sorry for poor old Health & Safety, which has made such worthwhile improvements to conditions in the working place (which is the main focus of the legislation). Most of its precepts are common sense, and the instances where it is ridiculed are normally more to do with fear of the current compensation culture than H&S itself.
When I use a ladder I always secure the base with a sandbag so that it cannot slip readily. When I have an extension cable running along the floor I always put sheets of paper under it where it crosses 'walkways' so that family notice that there is something on the ground. I have a fire extinguisher and two fire alarms (one ionic and one smoke) on each floor. When using an extension cable in the garden I always ensure that it is plugged in through an RCD (residual current detector) unit. I could quote many more instances. I think I am being sensible, others might describe it as anal. Decide according to taste.
Regards
Chris

Having recently pricked my thumb pruning a rose, I feel I should sue David Austin for selling me such a dangerous object.
I've heard a lot of ludicrous HSE stories in my time, but that one's a corker. So this poor old lady can't enjoy plants, just as she has been for donkey's years? Gardening is good for the health. By depriving her of the only bit of garden she has, Lewisham could be putting her well-being at risk.

Re: Elf and safety gone mad in Sydenham
If she had a cat she would be able to sue to council under the Human Rights Act.
Excessive numbers of plants blocking balconies that access other peoples' flats are H&S risk and an inconvenience for neighbours with buggies or wheelchairs. In the right circumstances it could described as anti-social behaviour.
I doubt the report is entirely truthful in the description of the problem. Take a look at the photo, it looks like there is a trellis / gate across the balcony. If this is the case and this is a communal escape route or main access, then I think the council had little choice but to take action.
Unfortunately with the quality of press in this country we might never know the true circumstances, unless somebody on the forum knows Mrs Cumberlidge and is familiar with the property.

Re: Elf and safety gone mad in Sydenham
Like the cat story (the cat was irrelevant to the judge's decision in the case) the media has imposed its own political views on the story.
I don't know the property in question, so can't comment on the specific case.
But the story does say that it is a communal balcony, a walkway that would be used in the case of a fire. Clear pathways are a must in a situation that can be very stressful and where time is of the essense, and smoke can limit visibility too.
There were some recent fires in south london tower blocks that resulted in deaths, so this is probably why the housing is being assessed, possibly with new regulations.

With all due respect that is absolute rubbish.marymck wrote:Having recently pricked my thumb pruning a rose, I feel I should sue David Austin for selling me such a dangerous object.
