Geneology Rev. John Wood Todd Tudor School for Girls
Geneology Rev. John Wood Todd Tudor School for Girls
Hello, I am starting a geneology on the Todd family. I have been able to trace back to Sydenham where my great great great grandfather was a Baptist Minister. His name is Rev. John Wood Todd. He started the Tudor Hall in Forest Hill in 1851 and was married to Martha Todd. If anyone has any information, archives or pictures I would appreciate the help. Thanks you very much. Re: Geneology Rev. John Wood Todd Tudor School for Girls
Hi,
I'm researching Baptist Ministers in South Wales and have an article about John Wood Todd from the Baptist Magazine 1886, and his obituary from the Baptist Union Handbook of 1906.
He was born in Perthshire in 1820, trained at the Baptist College in Pontypool from where he went to be minister at the following churches:
Stratford upon Avon 1845-1847
Brown Street Salisbury 847-1853 (Where he married Martha Robinson in 1850)
Sydenham 1856-1879, where he founded the Union Church, Forest Hill.
He became President of the London Baptist Association in 1884.
He died 13 July 1905.
In the 1871 Census he is in Church Hill Ladies College, Lewisham with his wife and children;in 1881 he and his wife are still there.
He had 6 children, 3 of whom died in infancy; the remaining 3 are:-
John, born 1852 in Salisbury, who emigrated to the USA; and 2 daughters, Maria Robinson Todd, born 1856 in Sydenham, who married Henry John Pulley in Lewisham, 1887; and Maude Margaret Todd, born 1860 in Sydenham, who married John Andrew Hamilton in Lewisham, 1892.
Hope this helps, If you have anything to share, a photo perhaps, I'd be glad to hear from you.
Best Wishes
Bob Evans, Cardiff

Hi,
I forgot to mention that he was minister of the Baptist Church in Caerwent, Monmouthshire, 1840-1842, hence my interest.

Thank you so much for the information. Its because of your info that I was able to look up other Baptist Magazine articles regarding John Wood Todd. Wonderful stuff. I have started printing them. I was unable to locate the particular edition you wrote about. I was wondering if you know where I could look for it. Thanks again. I think I have a picture of him. Not sure though. Its time correct and was in our old family album. If you have seen any pictures of him please let me know. If your interested for some reason in the one I have I can email it to you. You have been a huge help and I appreciate the posts. Dave
