News of the World & Sydenham
The NotW phone hacking scandal is now reaching into our own community.
Viewers to Channel 4 News tonight will have heard the allegations made by Tom Watson MP about the surveillance of Chief Superintendant Dave Cook and his wife by people on behalf of the News of the World. Regulars here may recall that Dave Cook was the investigating officer in the Golden Lion Daniel Morgan axe murder case.
You can catch up on that here: http://www.sydenham.org.uk/news_daniel_ ... rests.html
The case collapsed after some witnesses were discredited. One man who walked free was Jonathan Rees. Rees, had worked for the NotW before being convicted in a notorious case of framing a woman as a cocaine dealer and paying a police officer to put false information on the Police National Computer. He got 7 years for perverting the course of justice.
According to the Guardian Rees was re-employed by Andy Coulson at the NotW. David Cameron was briefed on this before he chose to hire Andy Coulson.
I will leave you to Google the Guardian's take on this crew. And do read the Metropolitan Police Authority's report about Rees, the Catford Police and Southern Investigations. Its not nice reading. Not nice people. There is a specific allegation that cannot be repeated here but if you check around you might get to hear of it.

You are quite correct PP.
I think behind the scenes there are quite a lot of people colluding on a damage limitation exercise and trying to get their stories straight.
I bet people , such as Max Clifford, see these events providing a massive retirement package.

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
Is it really any surprise that journalists would stoop to very low levels to get inside information or what ever. It's what they do, the fact its in The Filth Of The World really makes no difference.
They have no morals and use entrapment in their so called sting operations, the fact they have stooped to some very low depths to get the heads up on stories is nothing new.
It's what that RAG and it's workforce stand for and doesn't shock me in the slightest.
Gutter press gets comeuppance shocker!
Bout time if you ask me.

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
There is a hillarious detail to the Dave Cook story: NOTW were tailing him to try and stand up a story that he was having an affair with the policewoman presenter of Crimewatch. They overlooked the detail that they were actually married

Another local connection is that Coulson apparently still lives in Forest Hill.

Well I know full well that the water has stopped running down the road. It was meant as a tongue in cheek comment. No doubt there will be another wate main burst in Brixton soon, as there were 2 last week

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
DigitalSpy has an interesting thread on the NOTW/Andy Coulson/Rebekah Brooks/Jonathan Rees connections and the targeting of the Sydenham murder investigating officer Dave Cook: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1501245
Ed Milliband and Gordon Brown both highlighted Jonathan Rees' NOTW/NI connections in Parliament yesterday. If this connection develops into a provable criminal conspiracy it has the potential to dwarf the Milly Dowler phone hacking saga. Ed & Gordon know that and I am guessing this is the game they are playing as it could severely damage or even destroy David Cameron. A damaged Cameron is probably more in their interest than a forced resignation which would bring a fresh untarnished leader to the dispatch box.

News Shopper also covered this yesterday:
http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/91372 ... to_suspect_/
http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/91372 ... to_suspect_/
NEWS of the World (NotW) staff allegedly harassed a police detective investigating the murder of private eye Daniel Morgan as a favour to one of the suspects.
...
NotW staff also tried to steal information from Mr Cook’s computer and ‘blagged’ his personal details from the police database, the Guardian claims.
When this was brought to the Met’s attention, officers informally spoke to then NotW editor Rebekah Brooks but took no formal action, the newspaper says.

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
I saw Yates answer one question on the Daniel Morgan case. The question was very general, and was concerned with whether Yates had knowlege of the allegations against Dave Cook (the most recent investigating officer).
Yates had given advice about personal security to Cook before he began the investigation, but it was ultimately to no avail.

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
It appears that BBC Radio 4 will tomorrow show yet another link between the NoW and the murder of Daniel Morgan, perhaps the most damning yet.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14545133
This bit of the story is partiularly illuminating:"BBC Radio 4's Report programme has also seen evidence suggesting that a week before Daniel Morgan died, he said he was taking a story exposing police corruption to Mr Marunchak, and was promised a payment of £40,000."
Maruncheck as chief crime editor at the NoW at the time.
So; Morgan tells Marunchack, Marunchak tells Rees. Rees meets Morgan. Morgan dies.
It would appear that the NoW is not only implicated in the cover up, but the actual murder itself.

Cameron is being asked to have the case looked at as part of the phone hacking investigation.

The programme can now be heard here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b0138xmp
Perhaps not riveting unless you know the story behind it. Just look upon it as the captain of the Titanic viewed a small iceberg ...

Re: News of the World & Sydenham
The testimony of the former Southern Investigations employees was pretty damning and it will be interesting to eventually to find what was said on the ex secret servicemans tape. Rebekah Brooks surely has to answer more questions about about her 2003 meeting at the Yard. Surely she can't be allowed to mantain her "recollection" that the Daniel Morgan case was not discussed, given the presence of three senior coppers. Also there was Dick Fedorico, suspended the other day. I'm sure he''ll clear things up
