Sydenham Road 60's Gap

Post by Tubby »

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone knew why there is a gap in the nice architecture on the north side of Sydenham Road where Superdrug is. Similar architecture either side then a big blocky reminder of the post WW2 aesthetic in the middle. Was there a bomb hit? I remember looking at the bomb damage maps but don't think I saw one there...

Aah, just had a look at that map, looks like something hit there, not a V1 or V2, just a 'normal' bomb?
Yeah, its pretty clear on google earth.

The bomb was a direct hit on houses on the south side of Earlsthorpe Road. They were rebuilt as was but the High Road wasn't. In one of Lewis Blake's histories of the Blitz and the V1&2 campaigns he says that a woman in Earlsfield road died, but the baby in her arms survived. If you look at the those houses on Earlsfield Road you can hardly see the join.
