Is no one else impressed that the Sydenham Arts Festiaval has attracted Sir Andrew Motion for its launch, July 2nd? http://www.sydenhamsociety.com/2011/05/ ... -festival/. The festival organisers have also managed to get some Arts Council funding, which at this time of cuts I think is impressive in itself - I hope I'm not being philistine here.
I was also wondering what it costs to get someone like a former Poet Laureate to speak - a question which some Telegraph reporters seem also to have wondered about. The good news is that Sir Andrew seems to be at the value end of the spectrum at £1,500 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebri ... -hire.html
Sir Andrew Motion at Sydenham Arts Festival

Yes, it's impressive. But bear in mind that most writers - even ex-Poet Laureates - earn next to nothing from selling books. Personal and media appearances and teaching are the only ways to put food on the table.
