Upper Sydenham Walk Oct8 '06 - link at bottom of post

Post by Greg Whitehead »

Thanks to Falkor for his wonderful pictures. I thought I'd put mine up also. There's a degree of replication but a few new finds and a different viewpoints on some of the locations. I've put mine to Flickr as some have commented about loading times.

In order to view my pictures you are best to go to page 3 first and work your way back as it follows the natural order of things better. As they are edited for anonymity in some cases please PM if you want to see all the pictures.

What I personally found to be of interest which differs from Falkor's I outline here and anyone who has a view please let me know.

1) Some unexpected plinths were found in the woods to the back of Ian's house...
2) Steve and Pat have oft debated whether the lower stream in Wells Park is natural or mains fed. The water in the stream is natural - you should smell it coming of the rock - but what of these odd pipes to the left of the rock? (fed by mains in times of drought, the pipes were bone dry at time of our visit?) Take a close look at the picture entitled "Sydenham Wells (with 2 pipes to supplement natural water)"...curious indeed
3) The Chalet and house with post box on Mount Gardens...
4) The large old house on Kirkdale.

Thanks Falkor,

Interestingly the pictures on Flickr have been viewed 117 times to date with the thread being viewed 128 times, so perhaps Flickr is the way to go? Saves any bandwidth issues, at any rate.

@ Steve/Pat would you be able to shed some light on the plinths/large house on Kirkdale/houses at end of Mount Gardens questions posed please? Also, what do you think about the stream being naturally fed but supplemented by mains water through the two pipes I noticed?

Greg, as I didn't spot them I can't really comment on the plinths. Are they stone or concrete, and were there any markings on them?

Somewhere in that area there may be a surviving property stone. When Sydenham Common was enclosed (it covered what is now Upper Sydenham and Forest Hill) between 1810 and 1819 the land was divided amongst those who already owned property in other parts of Lewisham. Bridge House Estates (now part of the Corporation of London) owned Ladywell Farm, and so were awarded two large chunks of the common, one at the Kirkdale end of Sydenham Hill, where Lammas Green, Mais House and Sedley Court now stand, and the other off West (now Westwood) Hill. Bridge House Estates placed boundary stones at the four corners of each plot. Three of those marking the Lammas Green plot have survived (I haven't seen the fourth recently, although several people have assured me it is still there)

Two of those those marking the Westwood Hill plot have survived along Westwood Hill. I've put pictures of them here, with an explanation, together with an extract from the 1916 OS map. This shows a third stone which might still survive in one of the gardens in Longton Avenue. The fourth, at the NW corner, would seem to have been lost when the High Level railway was built in the 1860s. However, it would have been on that wooded slope that had previously been part of the garden of the Wood. Has it survived? The two circular plinths don't look likely, but the one with the "For Sale" notice looks possible.

By the way, I'll make a separate post about your other questions

Thank you Steve,

I didn't see any significance with the find but must admit looking at the other boundary stones the one behind Ian's garden could well be the lost one. I did not see any markings from the distance and angle I was looking at but the sun wasn't helping.

I have some free time on Sunday and will visit the site and take some more pictures for you. If it does turn out to be the missing stone I'll take you to it or PM you.

Looking forward to the other information and, as always, thank you for the response.
