From the Sydenham Music Newsletter:
The shock news reached us by letter last week that Lewisham Council has decided that, as from the end of this season, Sydenham Music will not be promoting concerts at the Broadway Theatre, Catford. The Council is to enter into a direct relationship with the RPO that will cut out Sydenham Music, the originators of the RPO residency, from their role as promoters and will also cut Robert Trory from his role as Music Director and
Conductor of the series.
No convincing reason has been given for this move. In correspondence with Sydenham Music, the Mayor and his staff, have acknowledged that the concerts have been a great success both musically and in building new audiences. While audiences elsewhere have been falling, attendances in Catford have exceeded targets and been growing rapidly. They have also recognised ‘the fantastic work undertaken by Sydenham Music’ and paid ‘special tribute to Robert Trory and his drive and determination.’ This makes their decision all the more incomprehensible and upsetting.
Sydenham Music is asking all its friends and supporters to come to the final concert to be promoted by them in the Broadway Theatre, Catford, on Sunday March 13th. This is your opportunity to show your solidarity with Sydenham Music and your last chance to experience the special atmosphere that Sydenham Music has created in Catford by bringing to the area the very best that classical music has to offer.
We would like, above all, to finish with a full hall. The concert itself will as exciting as any we have presented with the young Russian virtuoso violinist Sergei Dogadin playing the breath-taking Paganini Concert followed by Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Fourth Symphony.
This will be your last chance in Catford to endorse all that Sydenham Music has stood for and achieved!
