a good plasterer to skim ceilings and finish the wall
a decorator/labourer to help us for a week stripping wallpaper and sorting out woodwork/floors
any recommendations of a good reliable carpenter would also be great

Handy Jan from the church magazine has just done some work for us. He fixed a falling down ceiling. He filled and plastered cracks and painted the whole of our one bed flat in a week. He put curtains up, went shopping for a lost shower rail and cleaned up after himself. Prior to this he fixed our shed roof, mended two single beds where overweight niece and boyfriend broke the slats. Put up heavy mirrors... loads of things. He is local (between Penge and Beckenham) and his number is: 07786 077287. And he was the cheapest of three quotes.
