allotments in sydenham area

Post by squig »

Hello,

I know that Alexandra Park was turned into Dig for Victory allotments, but does anyone know of any other parks that were also used to grow food?

Thank you!

Alex:

On some abandoned allotments near you, possibly the last complete Anderson shelter in Sydenham?

The issue of the Beckenham & Penge Advertiser for 31st October 1940, page 2, reported that allotments in Crystal Palace Park had been abandoned because the soil was unsuitable. The Crystal Palace Company's warnings of this had gone unheeded.

Just about anywhere was used as allotments,
Baxterfields as it is now, was one, the sports grounds along Dulwich Common another I remember, a lot more sports grounds than parks I would say used as allotments.

Not Sydenham I know but Hyde park was dug up, and bomb sites in the city around St Pauls; about any place that was half suitable.
Some of them where quite short lived as things got rebuilt.

The allotments at the end of the lane by the Dulwich toll gate are built on the site of a massive anti aircraft gun site, still explorable inthe early 60s.
The ones off Kenthouse road bordered by the Poole river were a pig farm until quite late, 50s I think, I knew the niece of the farmer.

There where quite a lot of allotments about and around Sydenham back then, still a lot going I believe? I wonder how many are wartime survivors, or existed before.

Growing your own food is a great thing to be able to do when there is none in the shops.
You didn't see any fat people when I was a boy.
If we did we'd have turned them into pies.

Ps that shelter has been moved or never was used they were dug in feet deep and covered with earth; My old house in Penge still has a brick built one out the back, walls two feet thick, reinforced roof, and which survived a hit next door.

more interesting to know why you ask?

Thanks for that about the Anderson shelter - but I'm really excited about what you say about the Kent House Road / Kent House Leisure Gardens. I've been asked what we know about the history of them any number of times, and no-one seems to know, so get in touch - either contact me via the Kent House Leisure Gardens web site http://www.khlga.com/index.php?option=c ... &Itemid=62 - or ring me - I'm about to pm you.
