Painted dwelling in Sydenham woods

Post by bigbadwolf »

I've just had my younger brother round and somehow we got talking about that old shack on Sydenham Hill (embedded into the woods) that was painted white with occasional graffiti that was built by some old west indian bloke who lived/sqwatted there for some time.

I have hazy memories from when I was little of the place I'm talking about and apparently the man that lived their died a few years ago.

If any locals know what I'm talking about, did any of you ever talk to him or know who he was?

Apparently he was a very nice chap, but I'm still curious.

i remember seeing something about him on this Forum a year or so ago. I think Steve Grindlay had some information about him. I often walk my dog in Sydenham Woods and this guy came up in conversation with other dog walkers only last week. From what people said, he seemed a nice chap.
There is another chap who currently sleeps in the woods. It seems a bit strange given that there are probably more sheltered places to sleep.

Thanks, Terry. Although I have read that piece from the Dulwich society before.

I've also learned that he lived in an old camper van on Oakhurst Grove of East Dulwich road before moving in to Sydenham woods.
